Good Day

I read a post on this site about connecting to routers together to make one an access point/repeater, so as not to get a range extender. I am not a techno buff but my daughter's friend works in IT. We managed to get the two routers linked but sit with a problem: It has to do with the security. When connected we do not have any security settings as it is a at lower setting (WEP?). How do we rectify this problem?

Thanks in advance for all assistance.

So I assume you connected the two devices together using an Ethernet cable, and placed them in different parts of your house, they're each broadcasting the same SSID, but each has different security settings? Why is it a problem to select the same security settings?

Also, make sure that their wireless channels are different, with your options being 1, 6 and 11 if you want to prevent interference between the two, or any two numbers that are at least five apart. In my home I have three wifi hotspots, so my options are 1, 6 and 11. They are connected via Ethernet over powerline, and it works very well. I also have the Netgear DGN2200v3, with an Asus RT-N66W and a TP-Link TL-WPA4220 powerline/WiFi module. My cellphone seems to switch between the three just fine.

Yster, thanks. I am doing it wifi as the Ethernet cable will have to go through a very low roof. There was no security settings at all and when we put it onto WEP we get no internet. If this does not work, I will have to go the route of a cable.

Oh yes, I had the same issue when I once tried to use the wireless repeater function with the Netgear and I couldn't get it to work either. It seems all devices you wish to use on this must support Wireless Distribution System (WDS); I suspect the Huawei does not.

or just buy a repeater like the TP-LINK 300Mbps Universal Wireless N Range Extender TL-WA850RE

I have two in my house and they work brilliantly with my Huawei B593 router and various WiFi IP cams

Did you ever come right with this?

I am trying to setup the wds function on the huawei (as the extender) and nothing I do can get it to work.
