Hi Everyone

We recently got our ADSL line set up at our office using a 4 port router. We have a second office about 500m away but a cabled connection will be longer considering that the cable has to be navigated through our factory to get to the second office. I have heard that the data signal fades if the connection is more than 300m. So whats the best way to connect our offices for ADSL purposes to the one router? (We don't have an internal network.)

Thanx

Ryder's suggestion is not bad if the antennas can have line-of-sight of each other. Otherwise you'd be looking at laying a few sections of 100m UTP and placing a couple of repeaters to regenerate the signal. There is a limit though as to how many repeaters you can place within one broadcast domain. I think it's 3, but that will be about what you'd need.

Placing repeaters is probably going to be a lot of effort and more costly than two yagi's... so look into that option and place two wireless APs at either end in bridge mode. I recommend Netgear WG102's because I've used them to do exactly what you're wanting to do and it works perfectly.

WG102: http://www.netgear.com/Products/WirelessAccessPoints/WirelessAccessPoints/WG102.aspx

And these are the antennas I used: http://www.netgear.com/Products/AntennasandAccessories/OutdoorAntennas.aspx

Actually I used 18dBi flat panels, but I don't see it on their site. I'm sure Duxbury still has stock.

Wont a line with several cheap (5 or 8 port) switches also work? Of course switches will need power close to them.

Go wireless

If it is on the same property wireless is the best. The one side has the reciever that is connected to your router and the other is connected to the other offices' network. (the must be insight of each other)

Other wise like ppl above siad Repeaters work very well.

but i would suggest Fiber optic cabiling on the outside.

(Fiber is expensive but fast and well worth it)

Ps cant use normal cabiling outside.

Just for interest sake, what does the equipment to set up fiber cost? Cabling and the devices that they're connected too?

What about the powerline units, won't they work

Probably not - they don't even like working on an extension cable. Fibre will be best - gets rid of electrical noise problems - wireless next best.
