So I recently upgraded my TV to the Samsung KS8500 from the old relic I used to have and am looking at options of how to connect everything up in a way that is user friendly for the whole family and still gives me the best AV quality.

The two ways I am looking at connecting everything up are as follows:

1. TV as central point

Console -> TV -> AV Receiver (Audio via ARC)
NVidia Shield -> TV -> AV Receiver (Audio via ARC)
TV (Netflix etc.) -> AV Receiver (Audio via ARC)

2. AV Receiver as central point

Console -> AV Receiver (Audio and Video) -> TV
NVidia Shield -> AV Receiver (Audio and Video) -> TV
TV (Netflix etc.) -> AV Receiver (Audio via ARC)

I am leading towards option 1 at this point in time as I can easily switch between the various devices using the TV and still have my sound go though the AV Receiver (Yamaha RX-V375). It would be great to get your input on this and reasoning behind the decision.

The norm is connect everything to AVR then connect the AVR to the TV.

I have 5 devices plugged into the AVR, and only one cable from the AVR to the TV, when the input on the AVR is switched, it outputs the corresponding video to the TV and plays the corresponding sound through the speakers and amps connected to the AVR.

All clearly documented in your AVR manual.

+1 - I've also got option 2 wired up

Option 1 is okay, but I'd only ever consider this if you have a smart TV, and even then, the Shield can do anything a smart TV does, but better, so I'd still opt for option 2.

Devices -> AV Receiver -> TV

ARC generally doesn't do more than Stereo, from external devices.

So that means the AV Receiver is somewhat pointless.

You want your stuff to go directly into the AV Receiver and out over the ARC channel.

HDMI-CEC should take care of the switching.

Or just stop using the TV Remote and use the AVR remote instead which should have the same result really.

Option 2 will give the best experience, as you won't get any 5.1 sound out from your TV. But from the other devices you will directly connected to the AVR.
