I want to connect two houses, 1km apart, via wifi.

House A has ADSL, which I want to use and "PPPoE" from House B. I also want to be able to access the computers from both houses as with a normal network.
House B is in an apartment complex on the first floor while House A is on ground-level. The only possible obstructions between them would be more 2-story complexes between them, but I guess a long antenna can solve it.
Other than the buildings and some trees, there shouldn't be any other obstructions.

I want to go with a 5GHz setup for decreased interference.

What equipment do I need? How much will it cost? Will it be secure enough?

You pretty much need LOS (line of sight) for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz if your distances are far, +100m. Unless you can get another beacon (tower, tall building etc) or waypoint to relay signals that both parties can see.
House A can see intermediate point J, and so can House B, (but A cannot see B). Thats probably your best bet.

I did a quick re-read and saw you said long antenna - do you mean a high tower for your antenna to go on the top? (Still need LOS).

If you have LOS, you'll prob need two routerboards, 5Ghz radios, directional antennas, and enclosures.
If you want to do a repeater (intermediate point J) setup, you'll need an extra router board, enclosure, two more radios, two more antennas.

See miro.co.za or scoop.co.za for equipment.

I was thinking of just mounting the antenna quite high up with support from the wall. I'm not sure if I'll get LOS though. No intermediate points will be available to me. Are there other wireless frequencies to use if I don't have LOS over 1km? Something a bit penetrative to penetrate a wall or two and maybe a tree?

Yea... gonna attempt the same thing in the next month or two.. Apparently this is the easiest solution.. http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=881:confused:

Cool link! Do you think that we need to buy two to connect two houses? I'm not too clued up on wireless equipment, so any input from pros would be appreciated!

This is very interesting!! I've thought of it but is looks like so much effort! I suppose if you have an uncapped account.. Y not share it with your other house :)

If you just want to connect to move documents and stuff you could always get to lines, one for each house and just setup a VPN between the routers..

But your wireless would work out cheaper i think..

I'm moving out of the house in a couple of months, taking over my brother's apartment which is just 1km away. We have 4Mbit at home and I have a R200/30GB account from webafrica.
A once-off say R2000 investment is cheaper than getting 4Mbit ADSL for many months. :)
I'm just hoping it's possible without super expensive equipment!
Would be nice if I can get internet at the flat, and to allow home users to get access to my network shares. :D

LOS or forget it... just one tree will screw with you @1km. You will have to stay on 2.4ghz. 5ghz must be clean unobstructed LOS!
