Connection gets dropped // help

I'm experiencing the exact opposite (although only recently) when using 3g only connection.

The moment it starts staying for a while on one bar , themoment it looses that one bar , it drop the connection immediately.

No i started using the 3g preferred profile , and basically now when its loose the 3g signal it ofcourse goes over to GPRS , and then it stays on GPRS for the rest of the day.

That irritates me greatly, because it's dog slow.

I would also prefer the 3g only connection(if it is workin ofcourse), because I believe i'm paying for 3g connection , not GPRS. (although at least it is there for backup, which is good )

It was never like this, but i guess i'm experincing the usual pattern with braodband in S.A
I was one of the very first subscribers to 3G in January this year. I was surfing the net, literally 'superfast'.
For example I remember ( the good old 3g days :) i could stream video smoothly . and it almost loaded instantly, and it would play the whole clip without any interruptions.

Now . i'm lucky to even to stream a video , without giving up one it 1/4 into the video clip.

So its obvious that with the contention ratio on the network, and more and more subscribers getting one every month, it doesnt suprise me that i'm now stuck with what looks like GPRS.

I have to now go and upgrade my system with WIFI, a 3g router and antenna just to get a proper connection, and although I actually dont mind going through the trouble , but costs money everytime.

I know it sound like i'm complaining, but at some point one gets tired with all the issues.
But on the other hand I couldn't imagine what would we do without guys like V3g that is at least willing to help ?
and I still believe Vodacom has better service than many other companies.

I do prefer 3g

Sounds to me like you're more affected by the 'breathing cell' effect than bandwidth per se.

Give the external high-gain antenna a shot and lets see. I've forwarded your addr to the radio planners for comment.

Thanks for forwarding my info V3g

Can u explain the diffrence between when your say breathing cell effect vs bandwith per se?

The coverage you get in a specific cell varies with the number of users in the cell, the more users, the smaller the effective footprint of the cell. The cell can thus expand or contract depending on the number of users, this came to be known as the 'breathing cell' effect.

Thus, in the early days you might have been one of a few users in your specific cell and the cell was large enough to cover you. Now, with more users, the cell might be 'shrinking' leaving you on the outer edge (no pun intended!) and with a crappy signal.

With 'bandwidth' I referred to the actual capacity on the local and international links. These do congest from time to time but are constantly upgraded, so the throughput should stay the same, taking the upgrade cycles into account.

Makes sense?

Yup it does makes sense.

Is there any actual solution to this breathing cell effect from Vodacom side, and from my side?

It's inherent in the technology.

Only solution is to either build more base stations (happening, but will take time), transmit more power (won't happen) or increase the efficiency of the system (go the external antenna route).

So, in your case, I'd go for the external antenna. Especially because you use a fixed location.
