The Mail & Guardian recently reported that well known BEE players, including former Department of Communications director general Andile Ngcaba, the PIC and well-connected businessman Barend Hendricks all stand to gain handsomely from a potential MTN-Telkom-Vodacom-Vodafone deal.

/me just shakes his head. NO HOPE! NO HOPE AT ALL! :( We are doomed.

MTN and Vodacom already dominate the cellular market, and with their aggressive expansion into the corporate and data space, an effective duopoly in the South African telecoms industry is not out of the question.

This gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling... NOT!

If that is true, then it's not only !CASA's lack of independence from guavamental's Department of Communistications that we need to be worried about, it implies that the Competition Commission & Tribunal are also not independent from guavamental influence.

IMO the Competition Commission & Tribunal currently appear to be independent, and maybe I'm burying my head in the sand bcos I prefer to think that the Competition Commission & Tribunal would do their job independently & impartially regardless of political forces.
