Consumers owe municipalities more than R118bn, Salga reveals

Municipalities across the country are owed a whopping R165.5 billion and some of it dates back to the apartheid-era consumer boycotts.

The amount was R165.5bn by the end of June this year and increased from R143.2bn from the previous financial year.

"Whereas municipal debt to Eskom (for electricity) and water boards and the Water Trading Entity (for water) sits at R25bn and R14.9bn respectively, debt owed to municipalities for municipal services already delivered, is currently sitting at a whopping R165.5 billion as at 30 June 2019 (compared to R143.2bn reported in the same quarter of the previous financial year),” the SA Local Government Association (Salga) announced on Thursday.

According to Salga, the largest component of debt relates to households which owe R118.6bn.

The government’s outstanding debt represents 6.2% or R10.3bn of the total debt.

Point I was trying to make is that they're consumers whether they pay or not. Question to ask perhaps is...how many people have made illegal connections to geysers/stoves/heaters/etc?

I'm not sure what your point is. Based on general media, it's not the general person in a suburb that does this.

Can't understand how it got so bad. My experience is they are very aggressive at chasing up on you and cutting you off if you have unsettled debts on your municipal account.

Yes, the municipality goons are quick to disconnect an arrears account to ensure that you'll pay promptly thereafter, and keep their swine snouts in the trough, ........ none of that goes to EKSDOM.

Money owed is the result of non-payment and illegal connections. If I have a prepaid meter but my geyser and stove are connected illegally thus, not billed, I'm part of the problem.

It is more than likely that a significant part of this debt will be waived off or forgotten. I don't see political will to recover this amount yet. In that case, it gets spread across all of us.

As per certain myBB people it is simple. "Take a drive to soweto. Just find empty house and move in. Start using electricity. You will be exempt from all charges. You will be offered prime government job within 6 weeks - no questions asked. You will get some money on the side every week from anc"

If you tell your people for decades not to pay for basic services as a form of protest against apartheid, you can't thank them and then tell them to start paying after you took over the running of the country (into the ground)

Which municipality would this be? not even Cape Town is that aggressive.
