OK, I filled out the online application this afternoon, and was given a contract to sign and fax back. The contract came as 'n .fdf file. What is this? I thought it might have been a mistake and should be pdf, but alas not.

What is .fdf and what do I use to open it?

Thanks

um... it should be a pdf... last time it did that to me was because I didn't have adobe acrobat reader installed. Other then that with sucktech you cant be too sure.

I have Adobe and a number of 3rd party programs that can read pdf files, but this isn't a pdf. Acrobat reader doesn't want to open it.

file command gives me this:

hans@sigaar:~/Documents/Sentech> file 2004092513022273.fdf
2004092513022273.fdf: ISO-8859 text, with very long lines

Hmm, opened the file in vi, and guess what I found? A link to

http://www.sentech.co.za/apptest/contracts/personal.pdf

Would that be what I'm supposed to get? My guess is the fdf file is some part of a php/something_else script that sends me to the above mentioned pdf, but it might have broken halfway. That online application form looked radically different in different browsers!

yeah their website is not the best. What you are experiencing is just the beggening which is sad to say...

If I were you I would hold out for a bit.... but if you really want to get MyWireless be preapred for some sh1tty service, inconsistent speeds and getting to know support pretty well...

Yup...

It's not that I really want MyWireless, but I really need an always-on (read "mostly-on" in S.A. terms) internet, and ADSL is daylight robbery. Dial-up is too costly for my purposes, which leaves me with Sentech or one of the other wisps.

Will see how it goes.

koffiejunkie - the link works for me, I got the corect pdf form no problem - good luck with your choice - if Sentech carry on performing as they have been for the past week, then you will be happy.

Koffiejunky: If you are getting MyWireless mainly for SA use as I have then you will be happy... I have two of my own sites that I maintain with them being hosted by Afrihost. I have a MW128 and have never had crap local BW. When I uploaded a database the other day I almost fell off my chair because it was uploading at like 26KB a sec and was up before I could blink...

So yeah local is cool with MW 128. International Speeds are improving from what they were but dont be surprised if once in a while your 128 behaves like a 26k modem... Its not that unusual...

But overall, their service (support) is not that good... nor their CRM.

But if you cant get ADSL (like me) and you want a 24/7 connection (like me) then Sentech will do for you...

here some speed tests to give you an idea:

Local:
Sentech -
14.2 KBps, or 113.57 Kbps

Telkom
Your line speed is approximately 98.5 Kbps or 12.1 kBytes/sec

Int:
Stanford - (?UK?- not sure)
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 45.66Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 50.46kb/s

Mcafee - (USA) This is really dodgy speed test... scores ultra high or ultra slow
114.8 Kbps
(14.35 KBps)

Bandwidth place - (USA)
7.3 kilobytes per second

i wouldn't get mywireless if I were you koffiejunkie

dialup...especially isdn, would be best for you at this stage, and work out cheaper than MW128 (and you'll get consistant throughput)

Yes, this will have to do between callmore hours, but if you work during the day, then whats the use anyway?

Trust me, hold out till at LEAST december before deciding anything, with the SNO coming Feb next year, iburst releasing their products and Telkom rumoured to drop call prices to be ready for the SNO, I wouldn't sign a 1 year or 2 year contract just now...

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

Agreed. I'm looking at ADSL 384 on a monthly basis until other options are available. It may cost a bit more but its a heck of a lot more reliable than MyUseless and the support is marginally better.

Noone, I let the modem run during the day (not even all day) only twice this month, and my total account was more than R600. The problem with Telkom is that they disconnect you every now and then for no good reason.

I'm seriously considering the adsl 384 option on a month to month base. But 2 or even 3 GB is rediculously little (of course there's some p2p to be done too).

For what you get (considering my purposes) both dial-up and adsl is just prohibitively expensive prohibitively expensive.

If Sentech really gives me such crap service, then they're still guilty of false advertising, and I should be able to cancel at any time. However, the only Sentech users I've actually met in person, are quite happy with it, even through the last couple of months. And both know what they should be getting from a 128k line. So I'm willing to take my chances.

I appreciate the concern, but unless I can somehow justify spending adsl money (I can't), I'll have to take a chance with Sentech and hope they get their act together.

The file you downloaded is supposed to be an encrypted pdf - AFAIK you need Acrobat 5.5 or 6 to be able to read it.

Rather get ANYTHING other than MyWireless.

Damn, can't they do anything right? If the file didn't contain my personal details I would have posted it here for all to see - it's plain text with some garble inbetween.

welcome to the fast, reliable and always online world of Sentech.

Wait till you turn the modem on and you get a signal and when you sneeze
you loose your sginal...

And dont forget... movce your modem around. For some reason thats meant to
give you faster speeds... esp with International.

koffie, you will wish you had the adsl 3 gig cap, coz on sentech you will be lucky if you can even download 2 gigs in a month at the speed, and p2p is totally out of the question.

well kbentz to be honest I have logged up 7Gb on my connection this month... and still climbing...
So in all honesty still kicks ass when it comes to ADSL cap...

I think its a choice. Sentech should come right... if not hopefully they last until more
options arrive in this country... as for Telkom... I am boycotting the bastards till they
give decent offerings..

P2P is excellent on my side but general browsing suxors... unless I am looking up TV schedules
locally which is the only thing I do... erhm and web development...
