Roodt, who as guest speaker at TLU SA's congress on the impact of the government's policy on the economy and its effects on farmers, said that structure makes it more difficult for the state to do what it wants. The art is to own nothing, but to control everything

He said it is even an option to create a foreign structure who have an interest in farming in South Africa, so that there is protection through international legislation. He is not in favor of a farm and assets in a trust.

The tax on trusts is getting higher and higher and it is easy to see who the beneficiaries are.

Not only farming. Private home owners should consider this as well. While EWC won't be stopped, but with it registered in an American or UK business, you can at least call for protection from those governments and like Zimbabwe, they will need to compensate you before sanctions are lifted. Something Zimbabwe and South Africa in their defense has been fighting for for almost 20 years. Both countries are just snubbed and Zimbabwe cannot recover.

This is a good idea but my feeling is that only the wealthy can afford the fees that go with these schemes. I worked with an accountant who was adamant that after CGT and transfer duty etc, owning a property, particularly residential, in SA was not a good investment or strategy. He rented a house, ran a very successful property management sideline and bought in Oz I believe. Smart guy?
