Hi guys.

so my daughter finally arrived and thankfully everything went well:) Now i have admin issues to try get here over here. the baby was born in india (my wife is from india and was more comfortable delivering there). I now need to get them to SA but we want the child to have SA passport (I am SA citizen).

All the home affairs people give me different answers as to how I can go about this. What I did manage to find out is that I need to convert th indian birth certificate to get a SA birth certificate. Has anyone here ever done this? if so who can I contact?

My kids were born in SA but I was able to register their births at the US Embassy here so I would imagine there would be a similar process for SA citizens registering births overseas.

EDIT: Something like this. http://www.southafrica-newyork.net/homeaffairs/birthregistration.htm or http://www.westerncape.gov.za/eng/directories/services/11525/17385#5

CHILDREN BORN OUTSIDE SOUTH AFRICA
If your child is born outside South Africa but one of the parents is a South Africa citizen. You can go to the South African Embassy or Mission to register the child's birth.

You will have to complete the registration form (DHA-24, DHA-24/1 or DHA-24/15) and submit it along with:

A BI-529 Citizenship Questionnaire.
A certified copy of the child's foreign birth certificate containing full particulars of the child's parents.
In the case of children 15 years and older, a BI-9 application for an identity document.

go to SA Embassy and fill the necessary forms.

Then go to Home Affairs to apply for child grant lol.

Yup I saw that as well but when I phone the consulate in Mubai they said it would be quicker if I do the birth certificate conversion in South Africa. Then I come to South Africa and these guys insist the baby has to be in SA to get the birth certificate converted. Frustrating!!!!

Can't the wife and child travel on their existing documents and then you register the birth here?

wife can travel sure. but the child has no passport as now. i could get the child indian passport and get visa to come here but then that gives me extra admin to get the child back SA citizenship. Also I am not sure what the laws are, if the child gets an Indian passport, i'm guessing she cant get SA citizenship immediately as she gets here?

Unless I'm mistaken she's already an Indian citizen irrespective of her having an Indian Passport. Getting them over to SA first might well be the most expeditious way of reuniting you and your kid, at least in SA.

hehe India does not allow you to be citizen of country because you were born there but my daughter can get Indian citizenship because my wife has Indian citizenship. yeah the easiest and most tempting thing is just to get them both on indian passports and bring them here... BUT... I have dealt with SA home affairs and I can see that this may (will?) cause some sort of complication when it comes to applying for my daughters citizenship.

i'd like to do things the right way if possible, even if it takes a bit longer. The ideal situation is to get the baby an SA passport from india. This is possible but no one here in home affairs seems to know about it
