"If we're going to fight corruption, there should be no holy cows," says Law Trust Chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University, Professor Thuli Madonsela. She told the Pavocat-Stellenbosch Academy Counter-Corruption Summit that fighting corruption meant tackling the "mafia" culture in South Africa, which deemed some people untouchable.

The holy cow of corruption: BEE should be slaughtered first. There is no other piece of legislation that cases as much corruption.
How on earth would slaughtering the BEE cow result in less corruption?

I want the names, positions held, details of the crimes and the names of the prisons they in.

I would also like a comparison of the sentences being gov vs pvt criminals.

This would make some interesting enlightenment I think.

"The number of government officials convicted of corruption increased by 38.4%. The NPA's performance in private sector corruption prosecution improved by 39.5%," he said.

Does that conviction rate include settlements?

It should include anything that results in a guilty verdict.

Yes, that is what it means as a declaration, the question is how that declaration was achieved?

This is the NPA's press release on the numbers,

however, researchers has pointed out some discrepancies, questioning their metrics,

and these are matters which was previously raised with both the NPA and the courts in regard to their case closures which was obviously disputed by both the NPA and the courts.

EDIT: Changed link to the DM

How do you think the Ramamessiah got so rich? Do you think it was his hard work or do you think it was his closeness to the ruling party?

At the beginning, he was headhunted by Nthato Motlana, Mandela’s doctor, to be deputy chairman of New Africa Investments Limited (NAIL), which was pioneering the government’s BEE plan. NAIL invested millions in the National Empowerment Consortium, an investment vehicle that used workers’ pension funds to finance mergers and acquisitions.

“Business wanted to co-opt leaders of the Struggle… They recruited people who they thought were to go to Parliament, who were going to be political leaders.”

He pointed out that the first BEE company in South Africa, New African Investment Limited (NAIL) was set up in 1994 not by the ANC, but by Sanlam. Metropolitan Life similarly “selected anti-apartheid leaders” to acquire shares.

So read it carefully. Someone with absolutely no business experience, but is extremely close to government royalty, gets made an executive director of a company that wants to do lots of business with the government. It is absolutely a corrupt relationship. And Your Ramamessiah is right in the centre of it.

Multiply this by 10000 and you have the state of business in South Africa. Specialist BEE companies now exist such that having them on board will guarantee that your business gets the tenders.

Then there is the broken windows effect. Creating an avenue for legal corruption will inevitably lead to avenues of non-legal corruption being created. After all if Cyril Ramaphosa can get rich off the state, why can't Zweli Mkize?

Getting rid of BEE stops this nonsense in its tracks.

The big business that created BEE were the Broederbond. They did it to save their own sorry asres from being nationalised while throwing the people that helped build their companies - white Afrikaners, under the bus. A lot would love to get hold of those Broederbonders.

That sort of corruption and cronyism isn't going to be stopped by the scrapping or BEE.
