Argh - so frustrating! Every month there's a new issue with Octotel's Cape Gate installation. They really are a useless bunch, and yet again I have to spend money on mobile data.

Update from Packet Clearing House wrt Quad9.

"

Hi,

Thank you for your concern.

We are regret to say that we have withdrawn Quad9 service from CINX, Cape Town, South Africa node as our equipment have died and working to bring service back as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Not sure if it's me but I find my browsing was a lot faster when we were pulling from JHB, I actually switched off quad 9 when it was being pulled from Cape Town

Octotel Cape Gate down again? Neighbors reporting the same as well. How convenient, after their supposed fix it went down again
From Atomic's Alert channel on Telegram:
Network Notice for Octotel customers in Cape Gate area, 19 June, 09:30

Octotel's Cape Gate node is currently offline because of a backhaul link fibre break.

Is anyone else on Cool Ideas able to access http://kociemba.org/ ?

I can ping it, but I don't get a response from the web server.
Seems fine from my work connection and on MTN.

I have the opposite. But maybe it was due to the failing hardware that it was slower?

Possibly I saw a drastic reduce in speed when comparing CPT to JHB so I switched back to Cloudflare or Google can't remember which

Indeed, the responsiveness reduced ones it was running from CPT. Not sure if it because of CINX or some hardware that was failing.

That doesn't make sense? Unless the DNS servers were on old HW and didn't have the same perf as Joburg.
Regardless, everything in Slaapstad is slower...

" everything in Slaapstad is slower..." HEY whats your ping to London? Yea thought so we not that slow  :p Maybe had to do with hardware that was faulty, i noticed straight away it was sluggish so just changed. I changed to quad9 today and its fast again so probably was just hardware dying a slow death... maybe we were the reason it died

I just ran namebench to test the performance of CISP, CloudFlare and Quad9 DNS servers.
I'm based in PE so i get 11ms minimum.

My tests show CISP DNS responds the fastest, then CloudFlare, then Quad9 (altho it would be interesting to run this again when Quad9 starts announcing in CPT again)

@PBCool would be interesting to know what up stream providers your DNS resolvers use. Or do you just use the root servers?

Looks like their DNS servers are currently slaving from google.
if you do an nslookup against "whoami.akamai.net" it returns a google IP.

I've had same results as you. I've noticed a significant slow down since the CPT one went down. Hope they bring it up soon.
