Thank you for the feedback, I'm also not a "downloader" so I will not abuse it, but the games are getting HUGE these days and the speed will be nice to circumvent that issue. This especially so after downloading MS Flight Sim.

We also consume all or TV needs via IPTV so no download needed that way as well.

I'm happy so far, but are yet to see anything more than 650Mbps on a local CPT CISP speedtest and a 700Mbps FAST.COM speed test.

On local and fast.com you really should get very close to 1Gbps.

This could be related to router hardware, cabling, network adapter settings or even packetloss or contention by the fibre line provider. Which network are you on ?

Anyone having issues in the Pretoria East area internet is down for some reason, using Openserv as my fibre provider.

Hi

I'm with Vuma. I have an Asus DSL-68U, which should be sufficient to run the 1 GBs, but I agree something does seem off.

Will try and get another router to test with and will try another Lan cable just to see.

Oh another Flight simmer, you just do it casually or really into it?

Yeah the nice thing about having a 1Gbps connection is that files, updates, game downloads can finish faster, as you note they are getting humongous.

The other thing is that there are 4 in the family, so Netflix, YouTube, computers, cellphones, tablets and laptops all work seamless without ever feeling or noticing congestion. No need for QoS to break up available bandwidth so each person and device have a slice. @ 1Gbps It just works.

As for the slower speeds on local, as @TheRoDent mentioned something is not too "lekker" you will need to do a process of elimination to track why.

I run this router, https://mikrotik.com/product/RB750Gr3 , equivalents will also do.
And make sure you have CAT 5E or better Ethernet cables, I use CAT 6A.

For WiFi I run https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-pro/
Thank s for tips. The speed is so inconsistent, which makes me wonder if it's congestion here in Uitzicht. I have been fiddling with my router this morning, but nothing really seem to make too much of a consistent difference.

I had a laptop plugged into the Asus router as well and that also gave the same as my pc which runs via a 1Gbs switch.

I love the Mikrotik stuff when I was still on the WUG. I have brand new a RB910 still laying here I still wanted to add to the system to manage Ad blocking and so forth, but that's for a later project.

Yeah we are 4 in the house actively streaming Netflix/IPTV, download game patches, YouTubing and gaming so the 1Gb made sense to try to have the least amount of impact when something had to download.

With regards to flight sim, I would say it a casual thing since a lot of my gaming buddies got it so it's nice to enjoy together.

I always seem to get more than the 100Mbps I had, but it really is hugely variable at the moment. Anything from 300Mbps to 770Mbps..

Next step is to plug my Pc straight into the CPE and run a test.. But to get everyone in the house to not be busy with something is the challenge.

***edit***

Problem deff related to a cable or router, going straight in between my PC and CPE gave me 900+Mbps

Check that your router isn't CPU capped at 100% while running a speedtest, due to QoS or lack of hardware accelerated NAT, look around for the option to enable HW NAT - if it's not a dodgy cable :p

Hi,

Yeah HW Nat is on and Qos is off.

CPU runs high 90's but now slapped to 100%

Yeah it does look like you are pushing close to gigabit speeds on your WAN connection, but that CPU should be powerful enough not to bottleneck with this kind of load with HW NAT enabled. Check under LAN -> Switch Control - by NAT acceleration does it say "CTF (Cut Through Forwarding) + FA (Flow Accelerator) enabled"? Also check under Tools -> Other Settings -> asusnat tunnel is disabled

@TheRoDent I’m in lone hill and cool ideas seems to be down. Called the contact Centre and after 15 mins of faffing around I’m told that there is a known issue with MTN. I can’t find anything online that confirms this. The neighbors are online with various ISPs including MTN. Is someone working on this?
