I don't know the story, and I have no idea what happened here, but I have to clarify something here. Just because a case is opened, doesn't mean anyone is charged. It's something the media uses to sell papers, and it sends the wrong message to civvies. In any shooting, even the most clear cut case, a case will be opened. It is standard operating procedure, and is required for the cops to do their job post shooting. So if someone dies, a murder case is opened. If someone is shot, an attempted murder case is opened. If someone is beaten off, an assault case is opened. It has to be opened, because it's illegal to shoot someone or to beat someone up, so technically it's a crime.
But, and this is the important thing that most media sources ignore, that doesn't mean anyone is charged with the crime. If the reason for the shooting or beating or whatever is justified, in other words, private defense, the cops won't ever charge the person, so that case is closed without anyone ending up being charged, or ending up in court having to defend themselves.
So just because a case is opened, it doesn't mean anyone is in trouble. Something to keep in mind for the future (for everyone). It's the "scary sound" of "a case is opened" that led to the confusion that criminals have more rights in South Africa and if you shoot someone in self-defense, you're going to jail. That's not true.
Our law is actually not that bad. It's pretty nice, actually.
