Bloemfontein - A policeman was arrested in Kopanong on Monday for the murder of his wife and son, Free State police said.

Inspector Harry Nagel said the 41-year-old police inspector from the Mangaung police crime prevention unit was arrested during the early hours of Monday morning at his wife's house.

"The police were alerted early this morning and a hostage negotiator convinced the policeman to open the door."

The man did not resist arrest.

The bodies of his wife, 25, and son, eight, were discovered inside the house, each with two bullet wounds.

The policeman was expected to appear in court soon on two murder charges.

Free State police head, Commissioner Amon Mashigo, condemned the incident and urged police officers to use internal support structures whenever they had personal problems.

Nelspruit - A Mpumalanga police constable handed himself over to police after two pedestrians who failed to get out of the way of his bakkie were shot and injured.

The 28-year-old constable who works at the Nelspruit police station was off duty when the pedestrians were shot in Nyongane village near Hazyview on Saturday.

"We received a call that a man was shooting people in the street and when we arrived on the scene we found out it was a cop involved in the shooting," said Constable Mpho Koli on Monday.

The pedestrians, Oupa Maphanga, 49, and his friend Psycho Ngoma, 30, were left unconscious on the street.

Maphanga was shot in the forehead and Ngoma in his genitals. Both men were taken to the local hospital and Maphanga was later transferred to a hospital in Pretoria.

The policeman was apparently travelling in his private bakkie with his brother when the incident happened.

"We cannot disclose whether he was driving under the influence of liquor or not because that is part of our investigation," said Koli.

The cop is expected to appear in the Hazyview Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder.
