Cop rescues 'babies' in car

Cape Town - A Parklands police officer smashed two windows to rescue babies from a parked car on Monday, only to realise they were dolls.

The car belonged to Janie van Niekerk, who has been making Baltorina vinyl babies since May last year. She drives from Mossel Bay to Cape Town every three months to attend a workshop to hone her skills.

The babies cost about R1 200 each and are displayed on the car's back seat to attract customers.

"They are very popular because they look so realistic," she said.

But the fake babies don't always elicit a positive response. Last year Van Niekerk was told off by a car guard who wanted to know "how she could leave children in a hot car".

Giant sticker

That's when she had a giant sticker made for the rear window and two for the car's front doors, displaying photographs of the baby dolls and the words "baby dolls".

The car was also decorated with signs carrying messages like "baby dolls on board".

On Monday, she and Charles Pretorius visited a friend in Parklands.

"We were inside when a neighbour called the police to tell them three babies had been locked in our car for about three hours.

"A policeman came from behind the car and knocked out the small window on the right to get to the babies," Van Niekerk said.

Apparently he touched the nearest "reddish" baby and thought the baby was dead. He then smashed the driver's window to try and save the other two.

'Probably thought he was being a hero'

Another neighbour told Van Niekerk and Pretorius that the policeman put his hands on his head when he realised the babies were in fact dolls.

She and Pretorius couldn't understand how the officer could have missed the "giant signs" on the car.

Pretorius added that the officer hadn't shown any remorse about breaking the windows and had said "he didn't have time to read signs".

"He probably thought he was being a hero and then it turned out that he was a fool," Pretorius said.

Parklands police were not able to comment on Tuesday.

HAHAHAHAHA... Owned!

But you can hardly expect any intelligence from a lowly, mindless civil servant like a cop.

Guy probably did not even see the signs. He was under stress. If anything this should follow the Good Samaritan statutes and peace officer should not be responsible for paying the cost of the glass.

We probably do have those in South Africa too.

Well child abuse made him very agro and he was just thinking HTF can people do this, being a cop is not easy and he has more than likely seen some pretty nasty stuff in his time.

The women is an idiot, of course seeing a "child" locked in car is going to evoke an emotional response. I wouldn't stop to check signs on a car either, she should find a better way to advertise. Besides, the heat probably isn't good for the materials the dolls are made out of anyway.

We could stretch that one :). Next the criminals will say they wanted to protect your car upholstery from heat damage and your radio too, by removing it or driving the whole car elsewhere to park it in the shade ;).

'I don't have time to read signs'

It's not about 'having time to read signs', it's about not being a total absent minded moron and being aware of your enviroment.

The signs are misleading because 'dolls' can also be a term of affection for real human babies/persons. If I saw a car with a sign "Baby Dolls On Board" I would assume it's a cutesy reference to real human babies because these signs are cautionary and designed to alert people to the presence of babies and emphatically not plastic dolls. So if these are as realistic as the article claims (even to touch), the cop did the right thing. Hats off the him.

He did the right thing, I'm glad we still have cops that spot babies in the back of cars.

I think he did the right thing, he got a call saying there were babies in the car, and he did his job by trying to save them.

Am I the only one wondering who the F. wants a doll that looks exactly like a real baby?

Yeah, I think it's pretty sick. Next they'll have realistic aborted fetuses, almost as creepy as taking the real one home in a jar.

I would've done the same thing. Get the child out of the car before it's too late, bugger the rest.

Wife locked our son up in the car by accident, car keys was still inside. I told her to break a window to get him out. A window is easier to replace than to cope with all that trauma and drama afterwards.

Yeah, and it happens too often, whether by accident or intentionally, for this women to think she's being clever by fooling people with her realistic dolls.

You sound like you think this cop was an idiot? I think he did the right thing. Why the fsck would that idiot put 3 dolls in his car and then a sign that says BABY (dolls) ON BOARD? At first glance you don't see the DOLLS. People like to piss and moan about everything the police do. I say thumbs up to this cop.
