Cop rescues 'babies' in car
Cape Town - A Parklands police officer smashed two windows to rescue babies from a parked car on Monday, only to realise they were dolls.
The car belonged to Janie van Niekerk, who has been making Baltorina vinyl babies since May last year. She drives from Mossel Bay to Cape Town every three months to attend a workshop to hone her skills.
The babies cost about R1 200 each and are displayed on the car's back seat to attract customers.
"They are very popular because they look so realistic," she said.
But the fake babies don't always elicit a positive response. Last year Van Niekerk was told off by a car guard who wanted to know "how she could leave children in a hot car".
Giant sticker
That's when she had a giant sticker made for the rear window and two for the car's front doors, displaying photographs of the baby dolls and the words "baby dolls".
The car was also decorated with signs carrying messages like "baby dolls on board".
On Monday, she and Charles Pretorius visited a friend in Parklands.
"We were inside when a neighbour called the police to tell them three babies had been locked in our car for about three hours.
"A policeman came from behind the car and knocked out the small window on the right to get to the babies," Van Niekerk said.
Apparently he touched the nearest "reddish" baby and thought the baby was dead. He then smashed the driver's window to try and save the other two.
'Probably thought he was being a hero'
Another neighbour told Van Niekerk and Pretorius that the policeman put his hands on his head when he realised the babies were in fact dolls.
She and Pretorius couldn't understand how the officer could have missed the "giant signs" on the car.
Pretorius added that the officer hadn't shown any remorse about breaking the windows and had said "he didn't have time to read signs".
"He probably thought he was being a hero and then it turned out that he was a fool," Pretorius said.
Parklands police were not able to comment on Tuesday.
