The Congress of the People today joined in the chorus of opposition criticism of President Kgalema Motlanthe’s decision to dismiss Vusi Pikoli as National Director of Public Prosecutions
"We can only say that the question of dismissal even after nothing was found against the director is something that could have been handled very differently," COPE’s policy chief Smuts Ngonyama told reporters.
Major opposition parties cried foul yesterday after Pikoli was axed by the president, in spite of the Ginwala Commission’s finding that the government had failed to show that he was unfit for office.
Ngonyama also reiterated the breakaway party’s opposition to the disbanding of the National Prosecuting Authority’s directorate of special operations (Scorpions).
"We are determined about the reinstatement of the Scorpions. If we were to win the elections, that would be one of our first projects.
"We need to rid South African of all wrongdoing and the Scorpions become very important in that process," he said.
