Is COPE going down?

Tensions are running high between leaders in the party ever since the naming of Mvume Dandala, former Methodist bishop of Southern Africa, as COPE's presidential candidate.

Cope deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa and his supporters cleverly won the day when they endorsed former bishop Dandala as the party's presidential candidate, effectively shutting the door on Lekota's ambitions.

But Lekota is set against this, arguing that he, as president of the party and its founder, should be its face in the run-up to the elections.

I thought it was brilliant of COPE to push forward a candidate that isn't the party leader (similar to the USA) and it would definitely be a good way forward for SA politics. Now I find Lekota doesn't back this plan :(

Shilowa supporters, weary of a bruising battle for leadership between the former Gauteng premier and Lekota, moved to endorse Dandala despite the fact that seven of the Cope provinces had nominated Shilowa as their preferred presidential candidate for the elections.

Maybe Shilowa should become party president, he seems to have his head screwed on right. He has endorsed Dandala despite being nominated himself. Good on ye mate!

Suppose Lekota didn't want to come across as a total ass.

I bet he's sulking though...
  • Split from ANC,
  • form new party to run for president,
  • recruit Mbeki loyalists,
  • and get overruled in the running... epic fail.
I agree with timgaul, if only all parties elect the best candidate among their ranks, and everyone supports the majority choice - that would be progress.

This is how it works in the rest of Africa, except there the unhappy candidate will stage a coup to overthrow the successful candidate

why is lekota whining?
i though the strategy was to put dandala fwd as the prez candi, while knowing they won't win the election to need him. then he's left behind while the others copers go off to parli.

surely cope isn't expecting to win the national election. at best they could win the WP & EC and even that's a stretch.

Could just come down to bread and butter issues, prime positions in goverment pay a fair bit more than what COPE does.
