Would be interesting to know if they, a hospitality company, received a Covid-19 insurance payout. If they did this would raise serious issues with fraudulent claim etc.

The happy young couple now hear they are in the second tranche of payouts. Taken a month and 5 mails to get there. Seems like stalling tactics to me.
As a big , well known venue I would assume they had insurance.....

I’d assume insurance companies have yet to pay out loss of business claims. Initial claims were rejected and only after court cases were won did they start considering pay outs but have not actually paid.

you can write the letter yourself, a lawyer won't have much impact

if the amount is under 20k you can go to small claims court

Not the case for my wife’s company that has had to do all kinds of gymnastics, and still are doing, to survive.

Regarding the insurance:

There are two potential claims which a hospitality venue might have against their insurers:

1. Loss of income due to infectious/notifiable disease (if such a cover was purchased) - these are the ones which have made headlines because of the court cases and for which interim relief ("ex gratia") payments were made. Most insurers are gearing up to start settling these claims following the SCA judgements. Insured's (and their brokers) will have to get all their documents in order to substantiate their claim in the next few months.

2. Cancellation of bookings - this is an extension which indemnifies the establishment for any deposits refunded on bookings which are cancelled regardless of cause. This is standard on some hospitality covers and a paid extension on others. These claims have generally been paid without challenge, subject to proof of loss (such as proof of deposit, proof of refund, letter from guest requesting refund).
