Municipalities countrywide hope to get the green light from the courts to add a surcharge to electricity tariffs paid by clients who buy directly from Eskom.

There is no clarity on how much that would be, but if an application by the South African Local Government Association (Salga) on behalf of about 257 municipalities succeeds, it may result in sharp increases for people in townships and rural areas, including industry and farmers.

Love the Eskom daily connection fee, that will get a surcharge, with VAT on top of that, so you can get charged 3 times while not getting anything during load shedding.

My argument is municipalities should have nothing to do with it, Eskom is being split into 3 entities, one of the entities directly deals with this, they should get all of them back from the municipalities. Worry there is more Mantashe blocking IPP when it looks like e.g. CoCT might end up getting IPP directly. But that's a double edged sword, so many municipalities that are incompetent.

Don't they add mark up already?
No... This is salga trying to get permission to bill people for stuff they have fek all to do with. They don't manage the infrastructure or anything of the sort as far as I understand it. So effectively getting to charge people cos 'gives us money for nothing'

Already happening in Cape Town mate. You know, the place run by the DA, that charges you more if your potable water pipe is a fraction bigger than 20mm
