Couple robbed of R250,000 by hackers while trying to buy a house

Dumbass hacker.... The Rand aint worth **** you moron

so lesson learned, never accept any instructions over email....

life is getting harder to make purchases.

and ideas on how to protect yourself?

Here is what I don't understand.

If the bank requires ID's, proof of address, fingerprints etc. before opening an account, how is it possible that Nedbank can't provide any usable information?

Either they can determine the identity of the actual criminal (unlikely), or they must somehow be held accountable for not knowing their customer.

:erm: eish Kaspersky can be a friend sometimes, that's sad.

Or the person who let their account be used by a criminal (got paid to open a legit clean account) must be punished in place of the criminal...

First thing is that it is an obviously inside job
Second thing, even though Gmail is an obvious red flag, confirm and double confirm details. It's not hard.

Shandin used to work for me when he was a school kid. Brilliant little operator.
Started with nothing in life.
This really makes me angry.

"Queried about why this was done when the last communication Thompson appeared to send was to disregard the proof of payment, the attorney, Deon Boshoff, said it was because the deposit was not meant to be paid to him.

“According to the deed of sale and confirmed by correspondence, the deposit was supposed to be paid to the estate agent,” said Boshoff.

"Deposit was supposed be made to estate agent"? Not a chance - it should go in trust account of legal firm dealing with the transfer.

Something is fishy here....

My mother is an estate agent. I've noticed an increase in phishing attempts which look like legitimate leads, such as this recent one:

2016-01-29.png

If you open the pdf it contains a link and then you must 'login' to view info on the house. I suspect estate agents are falling for this, and they will have info on buyers, sellers, bond attorneys, transfer attorneys all in their recent email which would make spoofing simple.

I don't think this will stop any time soon since it's been so profitable for the criminals.

i dont understand how the banks can say the money is gone. (kinda)

there is always a delay in transfering money, even if you transfer from your savings account to your credit account, it shows and is available but the people on the phone will tell you its "pending approval" but they dont show you.

the trail is digital, im more inclined to believe the banks dont give a damn and dont want to get involved. they throw their hands up way too easy.

direct debit and the party can take what they want from my account when they want.
fraud and they cant help or trace, it's my problem

why am i putting my money in the bank if they cant protect it??

Unfortunately it is possible. Not going to explain its done how for obvious reasons, but it can.

Gmail didn’t flag the spoofed e-mails
They flag spam mails not spearfishing attacks.

the banks didn’t flag the R250,000 transfer to the scammer’s account.
Why would they? Banks see thousands of transactions like that a day.

whats the bet that if this money belonged to the bank or the reserve bank or the president or some such, they would trace the money right to the end point. AND have the power to reverse the transaction. i dno, maybe i've got too many movies in my head atm.

They can trace it. Its a little like being able to say conclusively that yes that stolen car has crossed the border to Zim/Moz. Accurate but not useful in retrieving it.

The big money doesn't flow through consumer accounts. All the things that make them convenient also make them insecure.
