Taxman coming for Temu and Shein

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) will implement an import duty of 45% plus VAT on all clothing from 1 July 2024 to address the imbalance between platforms like Temu and local retailers.

This comes after several local e-commerce players claimed that companies like Shein and Temu exploited tax loopholes to undercut South African retailers.

Yep, nobody cares about the couriers and customs officials losing jobs over this.

Customs officials are not gonna lose jobs. In fact they'll hire more of them for this. Sheltered lower rank cadre employment.

I could not care less about sponsoring local jobs anymore. Enough is enough, it went beyond being reasonable to just being ridiculous.

BEE has added a 50% premium to textile products, to use just a single example.

F*** off.

It's funny how SA is in Brics yet it's Euro countries which get visa free entry into China for 15 days. Now even arch enemy of Russia, Poland is getting 15 days visa free into China, while SA the S in the BRICS is getting vokol.

Ramaphosa has to decide. F over Temu/Shein and possibly make a bigger enemy out of Xi or just pretend to do something.

"You not my friend therefore you I'll punish you by requiring that you have a Visa"

That's not how it works.....

I want to know how they can courier something for free from China when Alibaba want to charge R2k?

Of course that's not how it works. Xi wants EU businessmen and tourists. They have the bucks and the Belt/Road Initiative is worth more than BRICS to him. Putin can also kiss him where the sun don't shine.

I've recently had a very fast delivery from Alibaba using SAPO. And I've had an EMS item from Japan delivered by a third party courier. So maybe SAPO is worth a try.
I ordered something on ebay a month ago that I'm still waiting on through SAPO.

Was it from China? My item arrived very fast. It was in JHB after 3 days of no tracking on MailAmericas and then in Cape Town after about a week and then got it 3-4 days later at the local PO in Parklands.

Stupid donuts are just screwing everybody. So all imported quality name brand clothing will go up in price at retail stores to account for the increase in cost price. Everything from Chinese PEP store clothes to Under Armour and Superdry.

Within a month or two locally manufactured clothing will also increase their retail prices because retailers
can add more markup while still being cheaper than imported stuff. Basically all clothing will then be more expensive no matter where it's manufactured. Consumer get's screwed either way.
