Covid-19 variant revealed by South African scientists gets name — Omicron

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the new coronavirus variant reported by South African scientists as a Variant of Concern, and named it after the fifteenth letter of the Greek alphabet — Omicron.

Variants of Concern are the highest level of classification WHO assigns to variants of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

@Jan that was fast! Just came here to post this...

- The World Health Organization designates the new strain of Covid a "variant of concern" and gives it the Greek name Omicron
- Health Secretary Sajid Javid says there is "huge international concern" over the variant first found in southern Africa - but there are no UK cases
- One case has been confirmed in Europe - a person who arrived in Belgium from Egypt earlier this month
- EU member states agree to halt travel to and from seven African nations where the new highly mutated Covid variant has been found
- Countries including the UK, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Kenya and Singapore have also restricted travel
- The World Health Organization cautions against travel bans but has held a special meeting to discuss the variant
- A top UK health official calls it "the most significant variant" to date, while an Oxford scientist tells the BBC: "It is bad news but it's not doomsday"

Profoundly disagree. The whole reason we have this ongoing global disaster is because too many scientists who know or suspect the truth are keeping their mouths shut.
Why should we always be punished for being transparent and aiding the cause?

If they can shut up because they're selfish and it benefits their country, why should we not do the same? Our case numbers are nowhere near as high as theirs, so eventually they would have to come forward first...

They won't. Our scientists are not up to the job. To prevent a tragedy they will immediately seek assistance from abroad.
That is such a clueless statement. We have some of the best in the world.
Next time our scientists should keep their mouths shut.
Wow, just wow. What, please dont let you ever see a house on fire and shutup

Now imagine you saved the occupants, and now nobody wants to come near you.

Well done hero and thanks for your service. Now please stay away from us until we say so...
