COVID-19 - Western Cape versus Gauteng

The Western Cape has seen a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases over the last week, raising concerns it will move to level 5 lockdown again.

On Saturday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize visited the Western Cape to discuss the rise in infections in the province.

This followed a call from health portfolio committee chairperson Sibongiseni Dhlomo for the government to intervene to lower the spread of the virus in the province.

He said these cluster outbreaks can happen anywhere, adding there is nothing the Western Cape is doing differently which is causing the higher numbers.

He congratulated the Western Cape government for its case management – however, he urged the province to strengthen its quarantine process.

He banna? What is wrong with him? Didn't he get the memo about sabotaging the WC at any opportunity? NDZ is going to fire him.

So are we going to stay in lockdown until there are no cases of the virus anymore? Don't they realise they just shifting the inevitable? As soon as lockdown eases up numbers will go up.

Why wait for it? Goverment had over a month to prepare hospitals.

Get on with it, lockdown needs to end and our economy needs to start moving again.

According to the Google Mobility Report, people in the WC are actually moving around the least. It's the province that's doing the most to fight the viruses.

So as to not overwhelm the healthcare system?

So how about the theory to test a surage works for SARC COV 2 virus to determine if that area it service is clean, or poluted rivers etc, maybe something instead of testing each person without clues.

The country has plenty of food, plenty of resources. We have the infrastructure to get food to people (trucks, roads) so really nobody should starve. Lives should be the first priority always.

I agree, the challenge is not about the food, it's more around the logistics of getting the food to the people, that's why I agree with what Panyaza was saying about proper coordination of food aid, unfortunately many see it as the government wanting to steal limelight from NPOs.

Many good points have been raised about this, duplication where multiple organizations hands out food parcels to the same communities while other starve, the chaos that ensues where a small organization that has only 500 food parcels go out to hand food and 10 000 people pitch up.

It's a pity that there are those in government who steals food meant for the poor making anything coming from government looks like a scam, but we are in a country where you need the protection of the police to hand out food so we really need to have more coordination between government and the various organisations, otherwise it is not going to work.
