At least it doesnt explode with the smallest impact, like a ford pinto
John DeLorean on the Pinto (at 9m33s)

That man is brilliant. He is a million times what Steve Jobs ever was.

"NO!, NO!, NO! - THE DRIVER AIRBAG SHOULD BE STANDARD EQUIPMENT IN THIS CUT-PRICE PIECE OF $CRAP! - AND WHERE'S THE AIRBAG FOR THE PASSENGER?????"

The Datsun GO, launched in South Africa in October 2014, will from July be available with an OPTIONAL driver’s-side crash bag.

This was confirmed to Wheels24 by the global head of Datsun, Vincent Cobee, while on a lightning visit to South Africa recently.

He stated that from the middle of 2015 the bag would be an EXTRA-COST OPTION in the GO Lux model.

The price had not been finalised, but such a unit, he said, usually added about R3,000 to a purchase price.

:wtf:

This announcement follows stiff criticism of the new vehicle after the GO, an entry-level hatchback, was released in South Africa WITHOUT crash-bag protection or anti-lock brakes.

Worse, soon after its local launch, the GO also failed the Global NCAP- and UN endorsed crash test procedures, and in a recent development Global NCAP has called on motor manufacturers to “democratise safety for all cars worldwide by 2020”.

In a study by Global NCAP released mid-March 2015, it was revealed that millions of new cars sold in middle and low-income countries, would fail the UN’s basic safety standards for front and side impacts.

This is being argued ad naseum...

1. I agree this is a bull**** car and Nissans tactics are disgusting... I have been drilling them to reapond on the results of the Ncap tests to such a degree that they blocked me on facebook...

2. If all cars have to be standardised in terms of safety features they will be so expensive that nobody from a lower income group would afford it.

So would this be your answer to keeping the numbers down in Lower Income Groups?? ;) :p

we have to keep selling these cars without airbags!

Ok in a serious note... I know we have to still sell cheap cars.

What I hate is the way these ishtty cars are marketed as premium quality when everyone with 5 braincells can see its a POS.

hitchcock obviously on the other hand loves this car...i mean the build quality is even better than the etios.

Quick comparison of MUCH SAFER cars sold in SA, in the same price bracket, as alternatives to the 'unsafe at any speed' Datsun GO:

Datsun Go 1.2 Mid - R 91,300 (recommended retail)

Safety features: NONE

NCAP Rating: The latest crash test results of the #SaferCarsforIndia campaign, released by Global NCAP in Delhi, show that Nissan’s Datsun Go received a zero-star safety rating. The vehicle structure collapsed and was rated unstable during the test. The high forces placed on the crash test dummies pose a grave risk of death or serious injury.

The Go’s body shell is so unstable, that it would be pointless to include airbags in the car.

Geely LC 1.0 GC2 GS - R 92,990 (recommended retail)

Safety features: ABS / Electronic brake distribution (EBD)

NCAP Rating: In October 2010, the Geely LC won the prestigious five-star C-NCAP (China-New Car Assessment Programme) safety rating for impact collisions with an impressive 45,3 points out of a possible 51.

In the front impact test, Geely scored 14,29 points, which is higher than Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris.

Datsun Go 1.2 Lux - R 102,500 (recommended retail)

Safety features: NONE (Driver Airbag OPTIONAL from Oct 2015 in SA, at an estimated cost of R 3,000 EXTRA)

Chevrolet Spark Lite 1.0 LS - R 101,200 (recommended retail)

Safety features: Driver's and front passenger's airbags / Front seatbelts with pretensioner

NCAP Rating: 4-star Euro-NCAP

The Chevrolet Spark’s acceptable rating in the test, along with good ratings in the Institute’s four other crash-worthiness evaluations, earns the new mini-car a 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK award.

The Spark was among the initial award winners announced in December.

The new small overlap test results for the rest of the mini-car group mean that no other models in this size category join the Spark in the winner’s circle yet.

If you are stupid enough to buy a Go you deserve a Darwin award. Its not anyone's job to keep stupid people from doing stupid things.

Also, the more other people that drives this type of crap, the better the change is that if I ever get into an accident, the other person will be driving a <1ton milk carton. Both times someone almost drove into me it was with a small hatch.

If you thought that the Global NCAP test of the Datsun GO was scary, check out the even more frightening results of the Latin NCAP test on the Nissan Sentra / Tsuru B13, currently still on sale in Brazil.

This crumples even MORE so than the Datsun GO in the collision test, making the fitting of OPTIONAL airbags (if they were available) entirely redundant!

:wtf:

No...we had the N14 and before that the B12.

Saw that mexican one, looks very similar to thr sa built one,

You sure? There were 3 generations sold here, a box shape, the facelifted one(that i had) and the final version before they stopped production.

Nissan Motor is working on strengthening the body shell of the Datsun GO hatchback, using higher-grade steel and reinforcements, after a UK-based watchdog questioned the safety features of the first model the Japanese car maker launched in India under the revived Datsun brand.

The Datsun GO received zero rating in Global NCAP's crash test.

The watchdog, which said the vehicle's structure collapsed during the test, had written to Nissan, asking it to withdraw the model because of the "grave risk" to passengers in the event of a crash.

Some other small-car models from India had also failed in the test.

People with knowledge of the matter, said the steel that Nissan Motor India is now using in the hatchback can withstand higher pressure - the metal has a tensile level of 520 mega pascal, compared with 320 mega pascal earlier.

It is also adding side beams on both sides to enhance the strength and rigidity of the vehicle. This is apart from adding airbags and anti-lock braking system by the middle of the year.

Nissan is considering sending the new batch of vehicles to Global NCAP to review its strength shortly, these people said.

David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP told ET, that the organisation has had high level of discussion with the top management of Nissan Datsun and they were informed that the car maker is (indeed) working on a re-engineered Datsun Go.

"We certainly welcome this move, if it is true. But we haven't received any vehicle or communication for re-assessment. It will be good to assess the modified version of the Datsun Go, and I am hoping that post modification, the Go does pass the test. Increasingly, we would want all cars to meet the UN crash regulation in India, and across the world." said Ward.
