typing con on the dos prompt also gives atypical results..

as does typing "con" at the prompt (no quotes)

it is of course because con is a pipe.
dir *.* -> con diplays a directory list to the console (bloody useless of course, but there ya go),

[stupid people and the techno-naive DO NOT DO THIS!!!]

also, of a very high amusement factor is to type

del *.* /s/y from the prompt.

hours of fun will be had.

con - console
com? - comports
lpt? - printer ports

A nice way to write to a txt file back in the XT / Dos days was copy con

copy con > file.txt
enter your data

wee - it's inside the file.

There's a good couple of these reserved words. They're not used anymore mostly, but are historically there since the dos / windows 3.1 days...

one I find VERY useful, is

dir *.* /B -> test.txt

will write a list of files in the current directory to a file. Always nice when cutting a CD and wanting to add a short list of the files on the CD etc.

Remember to hit F6 and then enter to close and save the file ;) AAAHHH the good old days!

Yeah I become a dos boy on my first xt after realising there were other ways to copy games besides using copyIIpc!

I remember the /s, still use it sometimes, but what does /y do?

open a dos command window and type this:

md \\.\\c:\con

There's your con folder. ;)

LOL

So you've rediscovered the "con"... :D

Anybody remember the interlnk and intersvr utility bundled with MS-**** 6.xx?

Not DOS, but OS/2 related : to "clone" an entire hard disk (and, yes, it will boot) you will use xcopy c: d: /h/o/t/s/e/r/v

Other DOS tricks :

Prompt $p$g will give you the familiar C:\> prompt. I have had lots of fun in changing the prompt to C:\PORN> and see people frantically trying to CD\ back to the root, or trying to view the non-existent pr0n files... :D

To do so, type in (at the command prompt) Prompt $pPORN$g....

Also, should you have ansi.sys loaded, you can have colored prompts... I think it was prompt $p$e3,33$g something, it was yonkers ago...

In Win2k and XP you can change the console window size by typing in MODE CON: COLS=80 LINES=25 (or whatever). In OS/2 this was an great way to get a "scroll" buffer...

There's other DOS tricks and stuff which I can hardly remember now...
