I have, of course, blocked the card. Now I need to go in and complete the paperwork and wait for my money to be refunded.

Anyone been through this experience with Nedbank? Know how long they take to process this and refund my money? They seem very reluctant to give a timeline on the phone...

And can they trace it back to where it was skimmed? I'd be really interested to know who, when and how, since I never let my cards out of my sight and this one has a chip.

do let us know what happens, as the banks claim the chip cards can't be cloned and if there was a transaction, then either you or the merchant is liable.

I know you can override the chip requirement and just swipe it on the POS devices. It can also be used if you enter the credit card number and CCV number (although for online transactions, you have to set up a username and password for it as an additional level of security, which I did the last time I used the card).
The CCV number on this card is practically wiped out, which is why I made a point of memorising it a long time ago.

So I am very curious as to how it was used...

makes you wonder what the point of the chip is then, as it has not added to the security.
Banks should have coordinated this better and rolled out together.
Oh well, NFC FTW :)

The chip is only relevant for point-of-sale purchases. If someone gets the 3 digit code on the back of the card then it can be used for online transactions. It wouldn't surprise me if some dodgy stores will accept a piece of paper that has the front and back details on it. Ie card is not present.

In the UK most web sites reject a card if the delivery address differs from the card holders address. In the UK stores can do an automated credit check in a second which tells whether the address is same as the address of the person on the card. It doesnt return the address, just yes or no.

While this doesnt cover all bases, it helps.

Unfortunately the new chip does not yet cater for online buying, as you only need the card number and CCV number.
I was actually wondering (last year) what they would do wrt online shopping.... it is a very big fraud problem still.

The username/password also only works with certain sites which makes you feel secure on some sites but doesn't stop other people from charging your credit card on a less secure site.

My sister also got a Nedbank credit card.

And about a month ago she checked her statement and R700 and R500 were withdrawn from her account. She also tried to find out where it was skimmed. Since she also doesn't let her cards out of her sight.

Maybe internal security issues at Nedbank's CC division?

I also had two tickets to Kenya bought on my ABSA card.

First one went through (I didn't get notification on that card) and they tried the second ticket the following day. ABSA fraud blocked the transaction and phoned me to query them.

Although their service is usually not as good ad the others, they were pretty good with this. Mailed a form, filled out and I had money back a week later.

The the same thing happened a few months later :/ but same process and all was painless.

This is only the case if you remove the magnetic strip, which I always do.

Note: I don't use the card in ATMs.

Note2: I haven't had any payment issues, even in small places, almost all vendors seem to support chip cards!

Yet another credit card skimmed... I don't even know how, since this card is never ever used for online purchases.

Got a call yesterday from Discovery asking about a transaction on my account - 17 cents to dropbox. Very WTF. This is the card that I only use to purchase groceries.

While I was on the call, another transaction for R1 to Paypal went off. The 17c was just an authorisation, whereas the R1 went through. Card's been blocked. They required that I file a dispute for the R1.

Has this happened to anyone else? It's a bit random...

EDIT: No chip on this card.

Skimming a card (this now the chipless ones) is as easy as swiping it through a handheld card reader.... and they've become pretty small.... so chances are somewhere along the line you didn't see someone swiping your card, or perhaps they just copied the card number, date and CCV number without you noticing.

R1 is such an odd number..do you think the cons processed that amount just to check if the card was successfully cloned and usable? Generally you wouldn't get a notification for such a small amount!

Also, I'm pretty sure but going to double check tomorrow when I get to work but the slip that the merchant keeps has your whole card number printed on it...all someone needs to do is memorize the ccv and they are good to go. I noticed this many moons ago when chip cards were not being used as much..might have changed now but will definitely check all my merchant slips tomorrow.

You're sending him to Dropbox?

How... sweet.

Her.

And I gave her the option of Kenya or Ethiopia. I even gave her a ticket to Singapore which she didn't use so she asked me to instead send her anywhere nice. And now she bitches and moans about it. God, there's no pleasing some people...
