Yet another credit card skimmed... I don't even know how, since this card is never ever used for online purchases.
Got a call yesterday from Discovery asking about a transaction on my account - 17 cents to dropbox. Very WTF. This is the card that I only use to purchase groceries.
While I was on the call, another transaction for R1 to Paypal went off. The 17c was just an authorisation, whereas the R1 went through. Card's been blocked. They required that I file a dispute for the R1.
Has this happened to anyone else? It's a bit random...
EDIT: No chip on this card.
Might it have anything to do with the recent
security breach at PayGate?
Though Nedbank did sort all clientele out
R1 is such an odd number..do you think the cons processed that amount just to check if the card was successfully cloned and usable? Generally you wouldn't get a notification for such a small amount!
In my line of work, I see c/card fraud all the time and its not uncommon for small purchases to be made first.
They're (the fraudsters) kinda feeling the card out to see if the purchase will get rejected - if it goes through - they'll push through a few more at that amount and then go up incrimentally.
They'll either take your card's daily limit down in this small manner or just "go for gold" and whack it up hard after the first couple of successful transactions.
I don't deal with transactions to PayPal though.
At least with them - as the victim, you've got some good assurances.
