Cricket World Cup 2023 in India

Not the first captain to do that.

Remember Smith went against medical advice in the test vs Australia circa 2008 when he was injured to try and save the match. We still lost yet everyone was calling him "captain courageous".
Not really the same, Smith was injured during the match, so if he didn't come out to bat, there would be no one to replace him. Very different to going into a match carrying an injury when a fit replacement is available.

I see Kohli giving it one more go in 2027. He will be 39 but considering his icon status in India, he will be part of the plans unless he decides to retire himself or has a massive loss in form.

Difference is he got injured during the match, he didn't start injured. There's nothing courageous about starting injured (and out of form) and taking up a spot...

This is so sad but I think it speaks to the lack of attention this WC got. I don't know if that is a sponsorship problem, ICC problem or Cricket SA problem.

We should have done something for the boys, they did us proud and this was one of our most successful campaigns.

Totally not the same scenario. Smith got injured during the game and subs aren’t allowed for batting. He can back to bat because had he not come back he would have been given out. Has Bavuma not started the semi, he wouldn’t have been given out and Reeza would have been allowed to bat.

Nope, they deserve nothing. This is the 3rd time we went out in the semis so they didn’t achieve anything new.

They arguably played better than previous WC but that is because we didn’t expect much from them this time. The 1999 edition was our best WC outing.

They could have won in 2007. That was a very strong side but for some reason did not click in the tournament.

That was arguably the weakest bowling attack we have ever sent to a WC (probably on par with the 2023 one).

Don't agree, Klusener bailed us out of a lot of top order collapses. We barely made it into the semis. It's remembered as a strong outing mainly because of how close we came to the finals.

We were far more dominant in this edition and put up a good enough fight in the semis. That's all I wanted, for nobody to say that we choked, but fought and lost to a better team.

Won't get into the Bavuma stuff and what could have been, that can't be changed now. But every single one of the other guys pulled their weight at some stage or the other...

I think you are right here. Klusener carried us in 99 whereas this year there were standout performances but it was more all round contribution.

We just needed one guy to hold up the collapse... which is what Aus had. Which is why they won.

I agree with us dominating with the bat in this edition. However, we had a strong showing in 1999 WC too. We destroyed everything in our path except Aus (ironically). This time we were 1 trick ponies who forgot how to bowl outside the power plays.

On Klusner, we didn’t see it as abnormal to be bailed out by Klusner because that is a role he “invented” and we looked forward to him smashing us into victory.

all this hate for Themba is just average keyboard warrior BS of people who feel their opinions somehow matter.
going into the tournament he was the best choice as opening partner for QDK as well as best option for Capitain.
he had a bad WC. but that happens. considering where he was at the start of the year and not getting selected for SA20 sides when he was fit. how he turned his year around as well as how well the team did under him. he should stay.

lets look at the positives.
we did not choke.
we were not screwed over by rain. i mean a little in the semi but that was just conditions changing and no rain and a sudden sunny day could have had the same effect on that pitch.
we were not forced to pick a player for a game based on a racial quota that left us a bowler short playing an out of form bowler to meet said quota.
we came home because we got beaten on the day by a better team.
same as India in the final they lost because Aus played better on the day.
People need to remember something about Themba.
an opening batsmen has a job. a role theyn need to play.
an opening bowler has a job. a role they need to play.
if the batsmen plays a shot that was not correct (QDK in the semi) that is brought on by pressure from the bowling side, that is credit to the bowling side as much as it is a blemish on the patience of the batter.
if the opening bowler gets taken to the cleaners because of incorrect length or line that is credit to the batsmen as much as it is a blemish on the bowler.
if the bowler gives the batsmen an unplayable ball that is ONLY credit to the bowler.
now lets break down the ways Themba got out.
go look at how many were a blemish on him and how many were a credit to the bowler. you will find that most of them there are very few balls that were purely a blemish. there were a few (Ned and SL from the top of my head)

Just to be clear, if you defend Themba your opinion matters and if you defend him then your opinion doesn’t matter?
