Cricket World Cup 2023 in India

Just to be clear, if you defend Themba your opinion matters and if you defend him then your opinion doesn’t matter?
no. all of our opnions on him is the same. they do not matter. we dont make the selection choices and none of us ever will.

I defend him berceuse he deserves it. as have a few others here.
but my opinion is as worthless as everyone else's here.

Then why single out those opinions is you believe they are equally worthless?

The thing that seems lost here is that no one is saying he should not have been at the WC. Those of us not defending him are saying he was not in form at the WC and so should not have been selected when he is not 100% fit. As a captain, he should have told whoever told him to play that he doesn’t support that because of (a) Form and (b) Fitness.

that would only happen if he was a brave and honest individual .... i will say no more ;)

all this hate for Themba is just average keyboard warrior BS of people who feel their opinions somehow matter.
going into the tournament he was the best choice as opening partner for QDK as well as best option for Capitain.
he had a bad WC. but that happens. considering where he was at the start of the year and not getting selected for SA20 sides when he was fit. how he turned his year around as well as how well the team did under him. he should stay.

lets look at the positives.
we did not choke.
we were not screwed over by rain. i mean a little in the semi but that was just conditions changing and no rain and a sudden sunny day could have had the same effect on that pitch.
we were not forced to pick a player for a game based on a racial quota that left us a bowler short playing an out of form bowler to meet said quota.
we came home because we got beaten on the day by a better team.
same as India in the final they lost because Aus played better on the day.
People need to remember something about Themba.
an opening batsmen has a job. a role theyn need to play.
an opening bowler has a job. a role they need to play.
if the batsmen plays a shot that was not correct (QDK in the semi) that is brought on by pressure from the bowling side, that is credit to the bowling side as much as it is a blemish on the patience of the batter.
if the opening bowler gets taken to the cleaners because of incorrect length or line that is credit to the batsmen as much as it is a blemish on the bowler.
if the bowler gives the batsmen an unplayable ball that is ONLY credit to the bowler.
now lets break down the ways Themba got out.
go look at how many were a blemish on him and how many were a credit to the bowler. you will find that most of them there are very few balls that were purely a blemish. there were a few (Ned and SL from the top of my head)
The hate is you coined it is because he knew he was out of form and he knew he was injured and still went along with the decision to play in a WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL.

No mate. You are as big an imbecile as CSA imho

We had one shot

actually to extend your thought .... the hate is because this moron thought that he would be the hero that would claw South Africa "kicking and screaming" into the final .... but he tried and failed in the previous 9 games and still had the arrogance to think that he was going to be the "hot shot" when he was merely at this exact time just an "injured hot s#!t" and would land up being a big ZERO and not a hero

I think you are right here. Klusener carried us in 99 whereas this year there were standout performances but it was more all round contribution.

We just needed one guy to hold up the collapse... which is what Aus had. Which is why they won.
The batsmen bar Gibbs and Kallis and to some extent Kirsten were dire in 1999. The lower order carried that team. Hansie averaged 12 for that tournament. Cullinan similar.

Twice! I don’t know why this team deserves more credit than other semi-finalists we have sent out before.
Because the other semi finalists teams were expected to be there and then capitulated in absurd ways.
This team no one expected to make it and lost a close semi where on the day the other side were slightly better.

Also those sides had coaches who prepared them for 4 or more years. These coaches had 6 months and only one series which wasn't a must win for cwc qualification. They had no time for any experimentation.

Gibbs should not have opened. He was more effective at numbers 3-4. They should have let Cullinan take the new ball with Kirsten.

He was still relatively new in that team and trying to find his place. Also necessitated by trying some of the other players as openers and it didn't work...

1999? Cronje? Um.... and the match fixing? I see no mention?

As for this world cup. It was telling how each time there was pressure, there was capitulation rather than grit and achievement from star players who otherwise regularly got the job more than simply done in other games during the event.

To be fair, Rassie and Aiden put in match-saving performances against Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively. Rassie's 76* was a MotM performance against Afghanistan, and Aiden's 91 was critical against Pakistan when the rest of the top order was in a race to see who could throw their wicket away the fastest.

India was the only match where they all bottled it, but in every other game someone in the top order stood their ground.

2023 Team of the tournament

I'd definitely have included Head, without him in the last 2 games I don't think Aus would have won.
