The Honourable Minister of Safety and Security, Minister Charles Nqakula and The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Commissioner Jackie Selebi, are at the moment releasing the latest official crime statistics at the Union Buildings in Tshwane - Nothing has been released yet, but will post as soon as information becomes available

Serious and violent crimes have been reduced by between seven and ten percent. Murder has decreased by two percent, assault by 15 percent, rape by one and indecent assault is down by four percent.

drug related crimes have increased by 13 percent and driving under the influence of alcohol is up by ten percent.

cash in transit heists have increased by 74 percent in the last financial year.

It is interesting how easily stats are negated when it does not fit our point of view - these are the official crime stats - and b4 any one of you can say - how can we believe them - these are stats as reported to police stations -

so Jonty - how can these stats not be truly reflective

Because there are thousands of crimes that go unreported. And more reliable statistics are now available from the Insurance companies and Hospitals - which in almost every type of crime do not tally with these stats - sorry xtermin8or: these stats are not indicative of the situation in the country in any way. Certainly the last 6 months alone has been a sh!tty time for anyone involved in policing and security - and everyone that works the beat will tell you as much.

surely if you were 'doctoring' the stats to make yourself look better, you would push the figures down much further

it would seem that due to the rise in drunk citizens, as well as those who are using drugs, we are no longer able to aim accurately.

All good and well, but if someone was interested and asked to see the source documents used to compile these stats, would they get them?

more reliable statistics are now available from the Insurance companies and Hospitals - which in almost every type of crime do not tally with these stats

for any insurance claim ( this can be the only basis for their stats ) the crime must be reported to the police, hospitals must report all deaths to the police, or else they can not release a body - so i am not sure where you get this from

Because murder is the one ultra sensitive international benchmark of crime. If murder goes down, then the international perception is that crime is on the decrease.

Anyway, believe what the government wants you to believe. Utopia is indeed near. We have seen a steady increase in crime since the beginning of the year, and the past few weeks have seen a marked increase alone.

according to the access to information act, you could get them, if they refused you could get a court to force them to give it to you, but so far AFAIK, no-one has tried this, basically I think because who wants to go through thousands of case dockets
