Hi Guys

We let you know about the CrimeTracer initiative a while back and got quite a varied response from users on this forum. We have taken all your feedback into account and developed accordingly. Most importantly the system now no longer requires an ID number to register. Go and take a look.

With CrimeTracer you can now:

- Query any criminal incident or aspect thereof
- Query an SAPS case number
- Query a vehicle license plate number, model, make, colour and year etc.
- Query an ID number
- Query stolen of wanted goods, IMEI and serial number etc.
- Query criminal incident locations i.e. "Nedbank Somerset West"
- Search wanted or missing persons
- Report any criminal incident
- Report any stolen item
- Report any stolen or suspect vehicle
- Report missing or wanted persons
- Add an image or photo to any part of an incident

If this is of interest to you then please take a look at CrimeTracer. We are looking for feedback, any both positive and negative, will be appreciated.

CrimeTracer will be featured in Farmers Weekly of 6 February 2009 for those who want to know more before they register. Yes, now even boere can report their stolen cows. :D

Thanks.

The field is still there, but it's not given a compulsory little star *.

Why is my cellphone number compulsory???

The cellphone number field must contain a valid SA phone number

The cellphone was set as required since the system will in future have sms integration features where queries can be run via cellular networks. We planned certain features of the system around that.

We do believe though that a user can enter that information once registered if he does want to make use of the sms facilities.

We are thus planning to remove the compulsory cellphone number. If you however do not wish to give it away just enter 0000000000's.

Please don't do what e-blockwatch did with their "sms to register" business. You also seem to have followed their ghastly front end. I would have started off with a clean slate and not copied. Also, allow the users to set their own password. It isn't easy to remember "b9emw1". Once again you've copied the bad boy.

Good points Sackboy. The reason we send the password though is for email verification. Lost password retrieval is made easy - try enter a wrong password. You can in your profile quickly set another.

Thanks for the feedback.

When you say "Query a vehicle license plate number, model, make, colour and year etc.", what exactly do you mean? Are you querying your database of cars reported stolen, or are you allowing users to look up a licence plate and find who the car is registered to?

BBSA, currently to the system itself various community initiatives and the SAPS. We are actively acquiring more sources. We are currently in negotiation with eNATIS regarding access to the system to query stolen vehicles.

I thought the same.

So far it seems to be limited to reports made on the site, nothing else

Yes R/SGT that is correct. Once we move from beta all data will be accessible. For now we are heavily testing the system and need user feedback.
