Hi MyADSL'ers

Please take a look at CrimeTracer registration is free, but a valid South African ID number is required.

CrimeTracer allows any member of the public to, for example, query a vehicle registration number, South African identity number, or any criminal incident which has been reported using the system.

We allow all users of the CrimeTracer system to report and manage their own criminal incidents. Reporting a criminal incident on the CrimeTracer system facilitates communities to proactively work together within themselves or with the SAPS to eliminate criminal activity in their area.

Note: The system is currently in beta and many features are yet to come. Any feedback, both negative and postive will be appreciated.

For more information and general overview of the CrimeTracer system you can also visit:
See Signature.

Hi Enclave

Yes this is a side project we are working on (myself and a few other CrimeX employees are working on this in our spare time) and currently we have no funding... We looking for sponsors or donations, but our main focus is on the improvement of the system and providing a way to help out community initiatives and the general public in sharing crime related information.

You want to help out? :).

Nothing will ever stop false accusations, but the person making them is known as all ID numbers are batch verified. Any false users and logged incidents will be removed from the system.

Any user making an accusation will be held liable in his own capacity.

How do you verify that the ID number is correct?

Way too many personal details required along with an id number.

Just makes me uncomfortable.

There is no way that I would put my ID number on a website like that. If it gets into the wrong hands it will be identity theft.

If you have and ID number, an Surname and Initials you can do many things like open accounts, buy online etc.

we take the security of the system very seriously, and we'll never make user's details available to the public (or at least give you strict control over what is visible).

we have a couple of reason's for asking your ID number, but mostly it's to let you know that this is serious.. and hopefully stop people from trying to abuse the system.

Agreed. I can't stand it nowdays where every single place wants your ID number and gives no good reason for it.

The reason we request an ID number is because the data on the system is already of a sensitive nature. Without knowing a persons identity we cannot hold the person responsible for their actions on CrimeTracer.

If you know of any other method of ensuring accountability on the system please let me know. We are open to any suggestions.

ID numbers are verified using an accredited verification service. Something similar to what Netcash or Transunion would use.

An ID number is no secret and falls under public domain. It is used as a method for identifying a physical person and does not pose any threat when used in that context.

I for one think this is a great initiative. Often I have wondered about that suspicious looking vehicle in the parking lot or parked across the road and have not had any way of verifying my suspicions other than by calling out the police and potentially wasting their time, that's if they bother to come out.... Hang on, what happens if one verifies, through the website that a vehicle is in fact stolen?
Call the cops?

we still have a lot of work to do on the front-end of things.. right now our focus is on getting the system working and functional (hence the beta tag)..

eventually we'll boast proper help and faq pages explaining the system in detail.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a great idea But remember that you'd only be able to check info added to the website by users, not against the police's actual records, so for it to be any use, many many people would have to ad to it.

Yeah I signed up, I'll live with the risk of identity theft. Ironic that we should be worried about identity theft when the purpose of such a sight is to potentially prevent a murder, robbery or jacking from happening, for me a far greater threat than identity theft but I guess having never been a victim of ID theft I don't regard it as threat...

It's not identity theft that concerns me; I don't like it in the same way that I don't like CCTV cameras everywhere, DNA databases etc.

I have a high staff turn a round in my line of business so I'm employing people off the street which is very risky but part of their job application is to provide a valid SA ID book. To be able to do some sort of character check against their ID would be very worthwhile...

This is a really great idea! I signed up.

One thing though, when reporting a suspicious vehicle, what details do you get to ease your mind? Only whether or not it's stolen? Many thugs change numberplates with legit vehicles so it would be good to verify the make and colour of the car. Bet you can easily then report a potential crime even before it takes place.
