We have discussed the required ID number field and are changing it so it is no longer required upon registration. Hopes this puts more users at ease. We will however require an ID number for the logging of an incident.

I have access to a database of over 30 million id numbers. Do you trust me with your information? Home affairs do - they sold it to the company I get the access from.

I'm not saying identity theft is not a real problem in SA [and indeed all over the world]. I understand people's concerns about giving out their ID numbers - especially to "new" websites, etc. However, as the ID Number is the only form of validation as to who someone is in South Africa, it is also understandable that companies need to protect themselves from fraud by verifying ID Numbers etc. Don't just give your ID Number to anyone, but remember, just as much as you may mistrust others, companies have the same right to mistrust you until you've proven who you are as well as your intentions.

Yet again there is no other way to verify a natural person without an ID number. Only a criminal should be reluctant in giving out this information.
What nonsense. Have you never heard of privacy?

Just how you respect privacy is revealed in your document entitled "Privacy".

We may use your personal information to:
(a) administer the website;
(b) improve your browsing experience by personalising the website;
(c) enable your use of the services available on the website;
(d) send to you goods purchased via the website, and supply to you services purchased via the
website;
(e) send statements and invoices to you, and collect payments from you;
(f) send you general (non‐marketing) commercial communications;
(g) send you email notifications which you have specifically requested;
(h) send to you our newsletter and other marketing communications relating to our business or
the businesses of carefully‐selected third parties which we think may be of interest to you by
post or, where you have specifically agreed to this, by email
or similar technology you can
inform us at any time if you no longer require marketing communications);
(i) provide third parties with statistical information about our users – but this information will
not be used to identify any individual user;
(j) deal with enquiries and complaints made by or about you relating to the website;

You obviously do not understand the first thing about spam.

Either way only communications regarding our system and our products will be sent, but that may be controlled within your profile by switching off all communications.

When you signup you agree to receive communications (as per our terms), which you may later switch off. If you do not wish to receive anything or are too lazy to tick one box (to switch communications off) then rather don't register.

You agreeing to receive mail is not spam as stated. All mail is directly related to the system and upgrades and will be of interest to all users.

Giving you the ability to select a box and not receive any communications from us makes it your choice whether you wish to receive valuable communications and crime statistics.

I cannot believe your attitude. I've highlighted some of the anomalies above, including some words and phrases you shouldn't have used in this situation if you were that concerned about furthering business with me. Such arrogance creates a huge barrier for customers, including the "lazy" ones.

The Crime Tracer cartoon above demonstrates the following scenario:
..
* Plates are checked using Crime Tracer. It is found the vehicle is wanted for previous robberies and suspicious activity.
  • What I'd like to know is how you would have legal access to private vehicle registration details?
  • Also, are you not required to register the storage and handling of sensitive data, including the above and names and ID numbers?

*Please also PM me your contact name and details (I won't need your ID number) so I can follow it up with your directors.

I think you need to dial down the defencive attitude a bit, it's not helping you with your cause. In defence of CCPO I think they started up in Amanzimtoti about 2 years ago. They have done a great job in this area, crime in the CBD has droppedand and no one I know who joined them had id theft. That said, get another representative to respond to these boards cause it gets heated here and putting peoples valid fears of ID theft to rest is extremely important. Your company has done too much good work to let it get tarnishd by misunderstandings.
