UKRAINE WILL TREAT THOSE WHO SEIZE BUILDINGS AS 'TERRORISTS'

Ukraine's acting president said Tuesday he would treat Russian separatists who have seized buildings in the east of the country as "terrorists" who will be prosecuted with the full force of the law.

"The authorities will treat separatists and terrorists who have picked up automatic weapons, who are seizing buildings, in accordance with the constitution and the law -- as terrorists and criminals," acting President Oleksandr Turchynov told a parliament meeting.

NATO CHIEF URGES RUSSIA TO "STEP BACK" FROM EASTERN UKRAINE

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on Russia to pull back the thousands of troops it has amassed on the border with Ukraine, warning of the risk of a "serious escalation." Speaking at a conference in Paris on the transformation of NATO, Rasmussen said: "I urge Russia to step back. Any further move into Eastern Ukraine would represent a serious escalation, rather than the de-escalation that we all seek." "We call on Russia to pull back the tens of thousands of troops it has massed on Ukraine's borders, engage in a genuine dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities, and respect its international commitments," he added.

'HISTORIC MISTAKE' IF RUSSIA INTERVENES FURTHER IN UKRAINE: NATO

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned Tuesday that Russia would be committing a "historic mistake" if it intervened further in Ukraine, after pro-Kremlin militants seized government buildings in several cities in the east.

"If Russia were to intervene further in Ukraine it would be a historic mistake. It would have grave consequences for our relationship with Russia and it would further isolate Russia internationally," he said at a Paris seminar.

RUSSIA WANTS UKRAINE'S EAST REPRESENTED IN TALKS TO RESOLVE CRISIS

Moscow said on Tuesday it was ready to take part in talks with Brussels and Washington over the future of Ukraine but insisted the ex-Soviet country's Russian-speaking east and south be represented in the negotiations.

"Indeed we are ready to consider a multi-party format in which the Europeans, the United States, Russia and the Ukrainian sides are represented," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters. "We are in favour of Ukraine's south and east being represented in such talks."

I think Russia is just doing this East Ukraine thing to bring heat off the Crimea takeover. The focus is totally shifted, and the longer they have their hands on Crimea, the better the chance they will keep it.

Both sides sabre rattling. NATO keeps saying don't dare invade the East, over and over. Russia has said they have no intention, then NATO just repeats the message demonising them. Pure propaganda.

Considering NATO and the west already tried the option of trusting Russia before Crimea im not surprised. Russia promised they would respect Ukraine's territorial integrity only to invade them. In fact during that time Nato actually attempted to downplay Russia's military movements and look where that got them.

This problem started when NATO renaged on their promise not to move to Russian borders. So let's start there.

Move Russian borders? Explain please?

Whilst I also read it wrong the first time, he actually states:

As in move towards Russian borders. However this could be debated. One could say NATO didn't move towards the Russian borders, but instead countries close to Russia chose to join NATO.

You can hardly blame the likes of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for joining NATO.

Especially with a perennial bully like Russia on their doorstep.

Pretty much, Russia is chasing countries towards NATO, more than NATO is pulling countries towards itself.

For a large country and a massive army, they are remarkably passive. Unlike the USA who have a very long record of invasions and support for insurgencies. NATO is part of their arsenal. The agreement with NATO was clear. I think you're getting the order of events wrong.

Russia's army has been largely in disrepair since the fall of the Soviet Union, even now its largely comprised of Soviet hardware. Since Afghanistan they haven't exactly been primed for a large scale war militarily and economically.

Admittedly USA has a reputation for invading other countries but personally i cant find a way to tie that up with Russia annexing part of another country.

Yeah, the U.S.S.R. never happened... :erm:

Still waiting for your comments on the pro-Kremlin mob that took over Ukrainian government buildings, and Putin's comments on the army's success in Crimea, btw.

No, it isn't. The US doesn't control NATO.

That has been modernised to a large extent. I'm pretty sure Russia will be able to go toe-to-toe with the states in terms of military arsenal. Putin has spent billions updating the Russian armed forces.

Only recently has Putin being modernising it and no quite frankly i dont believe they would stand a chance against the USA/NATO.

Have the Russians said anything about the pro-Kremlin mob that took over another country's state buildings?
You say pro-Kremlin, when in all probability they are ethic Russians concerned about being marginalised by the new fascist-friendly regime. Their language rights have been taken away for starters.
