Hi guys, I've got a little problem.

I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 793s 17" CRT monitor, the thing is it's starting to hurt my eyes badly. I've set the screen refreshrate to 85hz and that's helped a little, it's plugged into my Geforce 6600 with the standard VGA plug.

Is there something I can do to reduce the monitor "glare"? It seems like it blurrs when looking at the screen, the monitor is not even 7 months old yet. I know I was an idiot for buying a CRT, but I was strapped for cash.

Please, any advice would be appreciated :)

I know this sounds facetious, but have you had your eyes tested recently? Also, if you can try glasses with polarized lenses it should cut glare.

Move it so that there is some light behind it, and not light from behind you that can reflect.

Thanks pip, I must say I never thought about the light, I've got one of these huge fluoresant lights shining wham, bam on top of the thing, I think I need to buy one of these little usb lights and use that to light up my keyboard, otherwise I can't see the keys, I type like a little girl :)

I did have my eyes checked, just turned off the light and there is still a noticable blur :)

In the nVidia control panel, go to color settings and decrease the default gamma from 1.0.

Also might wanna try adjusting the contrast and brightness on the gfx card after that.

I decreased the gamma to .80 and put digital vibrance on low, when changing brightness or contrast it screws up the image, it's made a huge difference, thanks Highflyer :)

Monitors can get blurry - I HATE Philips monitors for that reason ( the 3 I have had all got blurry quickly). But the focus can normally be adjusted by competent techs.

If it is flickering, often those DC transformers powering e.g. your modem/router/speakers can affect the flicker. Give it a degauss too.

Pleasure man.

In fact you can turn the digital vibrance completely off. All it does is make the colours more pronounced i.e. "louder" which can put additional strain on your eyes.

My eyes used to hurt until I went up to 19" or larger. Apart from the brightness which is often set way too high, I had to run at a minimum of 95Hz to prevent my eyes hurting like hell.

Just testing out Digital vibrance a bit, it looks better than before, but it will start to hurt my eyes. I've got another question, can I buy a DVI adapter for my monitor and plug that in the VGA plug and into my graphics card?, or doesn't it work that way?

Edit: X, you probably got an LCD hey? You're not as "arm" as I am :)

i second napalm ... save up and get yourself a lcd .... prices have come down drastically .... i would say ... buy the one that has a longest guarantee, lowest response time (4ms is good) and the biggest screen that your budget allows.

i have a 4ms lcd, 17" LCD.... works great and I can sit in front of it for hours ... without any eye strain .... the cool thing is that LCD's don't have a "refresh rate" so to speak ... makes a huge difference.... and if you chose the opaque screens ... you do not get much background reflection either.
