This is either going to work OKish or backfire spectacularly for the devs...not sure which.

That's actually disgusting. Millions of women are subjected to this trauma every year, but not one gamer feels protective of them, unless its a personal acquaintaince. Do we 'root' for the victim to get on with her survival?

I'm actually quite disgusted that they'd take sex so far to sell it.

I don't think it was intended as an insult to women who have been raped man. I've followed this games development and from what I gather, this scene is highly charged with emotion and it was done for dramatic effect. It's not like he literally rapes her also, he just shows signs that he's planning on going there.

People also get shot every year, people get their houses broken into every year, people die in car accidents every year, people die in wars every year, people die to gunshots every year and bombings... should they take that out of games too? And it's not like every game has some kind of rape scene happening in it.

TLDR: If it is there for effect, I don't see a problem with this kind of scene in a game. It is not as overboard and not anywhere near as graphic as you may think it is.

enough sickos out there that will relish the possibilities.

lol what? So all content should be made bearing in mind that there are some sickos out there that will "relish the possibilities" ?

Seriously?

I agree with the point you make, and in all honesty, after reading a somewhat less emotional piece (when will I learn not to use Tarryn as a source for anything?) I felt I had overreacted a tad.

I'm certainly not a Fox flunky that believes that video gaming is responsible for society's ills, but I also think we all need to have a line that we won't cross. For me, that is rape, or the insinuation of such.
That's a personal choice, based on my personal feelings and history.

Nope.
I said that despite the outcry and repulsion there are people out there that will look forward to this title just for that specific reason.

Dude, no... it's not a hardcore rape scene. It's a guy who is really threatening to her and the scene may or may not have rape tones to it (depends on your interpretation).

First time I saw that scene (before reading all this mess) the potential for Lara to get raped didn't even occur to me. This whole thing is stupid.

What really grates me about the article she wrote is where she says "So, apparently, Lara Croft can only be either a hyper-sexualised object for men to gawp at, or a helpless object who needs a man to save her..."

That kind of statement just really gets to me... nobody ever said that she has to be one of the two. In fact the game developers have taken a step in the right direction by changing Lara's appearance from super hero bimbo with double F boobs to what she is being portrayed as now.

The whole feminist thing where we look for rubbish to accuse people of "degrading" women really has to stop. Lara is a female character and females are different to men, if a woman appears to be physically vulnerable and it works in a scenario then why the hell not? Do you hear guys complaining about Duke Nukem and say "OMG Duke is degrading to men! He is a stupid brute and makes men look stupid!" no, we don't because we understand that certain men are stupid and act the way Duke does... so what?

She's complaining about the previous Lara being "gawped" at... who the hell cares? If it sold their product, and if the target demographic enjoys gawping at women then that sells their product.

God we need to really stop with this oversensitive BS.

Millions of creep and sprites die every day in games.

Who speaks for them ?

The headline reads:
Subjects Lara Croft to an attempted rape

Its pretty obvious what they're trying to sell here.
