A shark attack has claimed the life of a woman in Plettenberg Bay.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says it received a call for help just before 8am on Sunday and launched one of its rescue craft to Central Beach.

On arrival on the scene, the body of a believed to be 39-year-old female from Cape Town was recovered from the water and brought to the beach. Police have taken the body into their care together with government health, forensic pathology services and police have opened an inquest docket.

Authorities have urged bathers and water sports enthusiasts to be extra careful along the Plettenberg Bay and larger Southern Cape coastline.

How exactly does one be 'extra careful' besides not venturing deeper than ankle-height water ?

Yeah you can keep the ocean, thanks. I'll just watch it on TV.

Bring along a friend with a drone so they can scour the ocean from above while you swim.

I think the first step would be to only swim in designated areas where lifeguards are on duty since they are on the lookout for sharks.

As I understand it she swam before the lifeguards were on duty and thus didn’t have the benefit of extra eyes which might have spotted it and given her advance warning and time to move away.

There were alerts put out a few weeks ago for increased shark activity off the garden route coast. Tourists to these towns should be made aware by locals/ lifeguards/ etc.

May her soul RIP.
