A friend asked me to have a look at her laptop running the RC for Windows 7 and it has had a curious problem specifically with MSIE 8 and Windows Live Mail in so far as it wont save or open any attachments or downloads (in the case of MSIE).

I can drag the attachments onto the desktop or into the folder but save as/all does nothing.

I've checked the security settings and its not that.

Any ideas? I've already tried a Repair Install and that didnt help.

I wouldnt bother trying to fix this issue anyway, she should also be getting messages saying RC will stop functioning in a week or so.
Get a proper version of windows 7 on there before trying to resolve an issue on a RC verison.

As said above. Rather spend the money for a proper licenced version for Windows and reinstall.

The RC version is set to expire soon.

The procedure for turning the RC into a full version is?

She's planning on buying a licensed version this week but I think she was hoping to be able to avoid a format and reinstall.

Unfortunately format and re-install is the only way according to MS.

The IE thing is part of the design of the RC. As of a certain date, some features where turned off, then from another date, some more features, and so on so forth, until the RC just turns itself off. So get the RTM version, or install XP or Vista. Or any other OS of your choice, because soon enough, that one will no longer work.

I appreciate the advice and it's been duly noted . . . but for now and for arguments sake lets assume sticking with the RC for another week or so is her only option. Anyone have any solutions given that constraint?

Had the same problem with Vista for someone. In the end a reinstall solved the issue.

Unfortunately there'll be no way to fix it, all I can think to try is use VirtualBox and another OS in it for the meantime with ICS.

Thanks everyone. I think I've managed to convince her to buy a copy today. Now to find an easy way to back up her old data and restore it.

GFI Backup. Does Win7 not include something to do this?

Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Windows Easy Transfer

'Should do the trick...
