Hi guys

I was contemplating getting a new car in the near future but i'm in mixed minds as to which one. I want something that is safe and solid with good road holding.

I was thinking maybe the Nissan Micra or a Citroen C1 or Suzuki Swift, but i'm not sure if I am getting the best deal from these cars at this price.

Which one would you guys suggest, or even a better suggestion? Or should I get a secondhand car?

I really hated the old Renault Sandero (I owned one - briefly - so I'm allowed to say that), but it looks like the new Renault Sandero is actually pretty good value for money. It now sports an updated interior, is the only car in its class (and one of the very few in the sub-R200 000 bracket) to feature standard ESP (a life-saving feature that's mandatory in Europe where the new Sandero is made), and it doesn't look half-bad either on the outside.

Do NOT buy it if you're looking for a quick re-sale, because it *will* lose value. However, if you can hold onto it for a few years, it's in a whole different league to all the superminis you listed.

Random fact: the Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo are all exactly the same car, engineered in a cooperation between PSA and Toyota, but just with different badges on. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen, but it's true (Mitsubishi ASX/Citroen C4 Aircross/Peugeot 4008 same thing). Waaaay too dinky for anybody but a student to be happy with one long-term. If you really have to have dinky, rather go for the Chevrolet Spark (spiffy roof rails!).

Dinky toys usually don't have very good road holding especially in strong crosswinds.
I'd recommend second hand for the budget you have.

Suzuki swift, very reliable car. But slightly expensive to maintain.
My sis drives one and she had no trouble since 2008.

I recommend avoiding any of the 'made in India' wonder cars ... e.g. Toyota Etios, Honda Brio, et al. Because how would you ever live with yourself?

Get a secondhand Polo Vivo or Ford Figo and be done with it. Re-sale value and anonymity in one easy swoop.

The Ford Figo, internal code name B562, is a subcompact hatchback manufactured by Ford India in Chennai, India. Based on the Mark V European Ford Fiesta hatchback, the Figo has been sold in developing countries since March 2010.

Anyway, OP, go drive them. like a 40km trip maybe. Feel how you sit in them, check the driver visibility, check where the cupholders are and if they enough and in good spots, see if you knees fit if you are tall

A Suzuki Swift demo would be my call.

Just don't buy a Chevrolet Spark whatever you do.

Just FYI, Suzuki is built by Honda ;) same factory.

I would love to see your evidence to support that bold claim.

They have never had a co-project that I am aware of, never mind using the same factories.

To use the same factory they would need to use the same platform, which they do not.

Now if you said Chevrolet that would have made some sense as the Aveo (in certain markets) is the Swift, but even that car I believe is built completely independently.
