But Suzuki is owned by the VW Group. I would also love to see where you got this from..

No, they had a short term deal that has since expired and gone horribly wrong.

It was only 20% or some such which made them the majority shareholder but not really the owner. There is some or other thing still ongoing during which they must return those shares now.

Ah, my bad then. Thanks for the update

I would love to see your evidence to support that bold claim.

They have never had a co-project that I am aware of, never mind using the same factories.

To use the same factory they would need to use the same platform, which they do not.

Now if you said Chevrolet that would have made some sense as the Aveo (in certain markets) is the Swift, but even that car I believe is built completely independently.

Haha my bad. Ill see if I can ring up the Suzuki salesman that sold us the swift at that time. Maybe he was a chop and fed us wrong info. But any-case the Suzukis are very well built and talking out of experience very reliable. Swift had no problems since 2008 and SX4 from 2012. They just a bit on the expensive side on maintenance, service parts etc.

You can get a very good condition , low mileage Mitsubishi Lancer for that price.

What he said.

Very underrated car for the price, if you can look past the slightly heavy 2L MIVEC engine and odd tyre sizes

Nearly ALL of the sub-R120,000 to R 150,000 cars available in South Africa ARE sourced from India.

This INCLUDES the Suzuki Swift - which gets a much lower NCAP safety rating, compared to its European version (made in Hungary).

Euro-spec (Made in Hungary) Suzuki Swift:

Latin-spec (Made in India) Maruti-Suzuki Swift:

Also note the substantial differences in frontal impact protection offered in the 2 different versions:

Frontal impact cross-members of Euro-Spec Swift: (notice the solid metal crossmembers and impact absorbing foam)

Frontal impact cross-members of India-Spec Swift: (notice the two sets of thin metal tubes and LACK of ANY impact absorbing foam)

Check out this Indian motoring forum - Team-BHP - which has comprehensive tests & reviews of all Indian-manufactured models, as well as other imported vehicles as well, and then make a decision as to what car is best for you.

AVOID the Datsun GO (or GO+, if it is ever released here) - they are 'Coke-can' DEATH-TRAPS! (No ABS / No Airbags / No Occupant protection)

Just came back from our Up! event. Wait for it, it's awesome.

Lol, if Up! is sold for R130 000 in South Africa I will be seriously surprised. It was my understanding that was the whole reason VW hasn't brought it to SA yet ... they just cannot afford to have their tiniest car more expensive than the Polo Vivo.

Is the vw up going to launch in SA?, how will it be priced compared to vivo?

Prepare to be surprised... in about 3 weeks' time. ;)

I dont think vw will launch the up here. It will be difficult to place it between the polo and vivo. The up and Scirocco are the only models i like

Dude, it's launching mid Feb. I just spent an afternoon driving around in 'em... Positioned below the Vivo, with a slight overlap in price but starting lower.

If you're prepared, then it's not really a surprise. Or can it still be?

The surprise is how well it drives. Look, it's not a fireball by any stretch, but in terms of its road manners it feels closer to the facelifted Polo than the Vivo. I don't know how we're going to keep pace with demand.

Awesome. I am due for an upgrade, are you sure it will be positioned below vivo?

As stated, starting at a lower price but overlapping at the higher end. 3-door only, I'm sure to protect Vivo sales, but decently equipped given its segment.
