<quote>Would you support a ‘pay-per-gig’ ADSL billing system if the associated costs were in line with international trends?</quote>

Im sorry... but this poll makes no sense, and actually leaves a bit of a bad taste. Please re-think it. It nearly sounds like a telkom made poll.
'PAY PER GIG" is unique to SA and telkom (if it does indeed exist anywhere else, i am sure its quite rare). so HOW can u compare international trends with pay-per-gig ???

correct me if im wrong. but i dont like that poll. sounds like a markinor question.

They are comparing the prices with international trends, not the actual concept. For example, would you be happy with the per gig billing system if 30 gigs would cost you roughly the same as 30 gigs elsewhere in the world.

A great deal of international ISP's charge per GB - over the cap, which is why one can only hope Telkom has a minimum cap and then after that one can purchase extra GB's at a reasonable price (which R100/GB is definitely not).

I think the poll is referring to 'international trends' as cost per GB, which starts at around R10/GB in countries like the UK over the cap.

It's used extensively in India. ;)

. . and yeah, I'm with noob5000 on that one. Is pay-for-use acceptable as a principle.

It's okay if they use the per GB billing after the cap like already mentioned, but is there any evidence of this. And it will only truly be a good thing if the pricing is inline with global trends already mentioned as well. From all the articles that I've read they want to do this straight out of the box. If the poll is worded: "Do you think the per GB billing is a good idea?", have 3 or 4 options for Yes, No, Only once a cap is reached, AND at reasonable pricing (hmmm don't say reasonable Telkom's "reasonable" and the consumer are 2 different things. Rather say ...and pricing inline with global trends.)

Yeah those bloddy Telkom Markinor surveys are really ambiguous, they don't word theire questions to address issues, but instead ask something like "how do you find your ADSL working?" Well errr yes it is working thanks (with the occasional loss of international traffic). Then they equate:
working ADSL = Satisfied customer
Then they make out that everyone is happy with ADSL!
(I just speaking from my experience with Telkom)

And i think in order to actually compare our per gig billing to some other countries, the cap should be alot bigger first :/ 3 gig is just sad :/

Yep exactly what the rest of the ADSL users are saying and hence the regulatory action to take place real soon from ICASA's report.

ICASA did mention it in their report so I'm going to go out on a limb here and be optimistic about this and give them a chance to prove themselves before shooting them down.

There's too much pessimism based on the past experiences (Clipse not talking about you here, but in general). I'd rather not follow that trend, but choose to see the positive actions of ICASA and sites like myadsl, hellkom and antitrust and even as a community coming together to fight the giant. If you're optimistic you'll do something about, pessimism seems to pacify most people and they just accept their circumstances.

The poll leaves a bad taste in my mouth also. I'm completely anti "pay-per-gig". I feel it's a huge step in the wrong direction and will invariably lead to higher prices even if they are acceptable in the beginning. I want to buy a 30GB account like I can now, I want to pay one fixed fee for my internet connectivity monthly, not R500 this month and R800 next month and R350 the month after that. The whole concept stinks.

From what i am seeing. ICASA is getting all their eggs into one basket and then going to show us what they have.....ie. SNO with Eskom with Licensing etc.

Cost of Telkom decrease as telkom was about to release the per gig saga etc.
hmm

I find i quite ironic that everything happens at the same time..... maybe not coincidence?

Anyway per gig billing is just wrong no matter if its after cap or not it should not be allowed

Does anybody know if there is a date available for when ICASA is going to announce their draft 'regulations'. Its been a while since they released their initial report now.
