I've looked at a few threads here from 2014/2015 when curved tv's were fairly new and most people thought it was a gimmick and would not be around too long.

Well its a few years now and curved tv's are still here and at slightly cheaper prices. I am in the market for a 65 inch uhd TV - just not sure if i should go with a flat screen as initally planned or fork out an extra R2k for a curved screen.

What's your views and experience if you have purchased a curved screen or decided just to go with flat screen?

Are you planning to mount the TV or have a setup where people might not be sitting directly in front of the TV when viewing? - Flat
TV on an entertainment unit using the stand and you will be seated directly in front of it? - Curved will give you a better viewing experience then.

It is just a Gimmick. All it does is make the supplier richer at your expense.

But here are 2 references you can have a look at and make up your own mind.

Rather spend the extra money on a larger TV -- gives you more value for money.

The only time you may see some improvement in viewing quality will be when you are viewing the TV from the "sweet spot" or focal point of the curve. As a display for a general purpose TV room for a family not going to work because all are not going to view it from the sweet spot.

BTW Physical Science Standard 2 in my days (Chapter on Light, lenses and mirrors). None of the other BS in the promotional material matters except for the basics.

Remember that a flat screen can be positioned to not reflect light sources (windows, doors).
This gets really difficult with a curved screen as it reflects a lot more areas.

I would like to wall mount the TV so I guess a curved TV would not look that good wall mounted. Viewing would be directly in front most of the time though.

Thanks for the links - those reviews were quiet insightful and I think i'm going to go with a flat screen tv as initially planned.

i have an LG SUHD 4k 3D 55" curved tv... we got it on a tv stand and we realy enjoy it, especially when you watching a 4k 3D movie, it gives you that cinema feel... but as far as reflection goes, if you have any light in the room, you can only see from the front of the tv, but if the room is dark you can voew from any angle and the picture clarity is brilliant...

really boils down to what you want to use your tv for...

Do not understand what this means? TVs are presumably bought to view broadcasts, DVDs etc. Then maybe as a monitor for TV games and a display for a computer.

As a game display for one or 2 and as a PC monitor where you are able to sit at the sweet spot --- maybe there is an advantage. But as a general display device? Next to nothing.

Are you sure you are not just trying to justify the money you spent on the TV to yourself by convincing yourself it is better than a normal flat TV?
