Sounds more like a bribe, are you dealing with the post office? If so take the items invoice with and make sure they recalculate the duty.

This is bogus. There's only an inspection fee that's less than R100.

The import duties can never ever be more than the cost of the actual product.

So something is definitely wrong.

No way a gadget is duty free, you're definitely going to be paying VAT and a clearance fee as a minimum, that's why I say you need to take the invoice to OR TAMBO International mail centre, or call the center to see what's up :)

Ask them to send it back to customs for reassessment. Happened to us before and if its not urgent just send it back.

That sounds strange. Their clearance fee per item the last time I used them was R150 but the VAT made it much more. You sure that was the CLEARANCE fee you were charged?

This is a situation where I would just let them send it back. Will be cheaper next time it arrives without any hassles. Easy if you buy on ebay.
