Cyberpunk 2077 - What the reviews are saying

Reviewers are mostly high on Cyberpunk 2077, the hotly anticipated role-playing game from CD Projekt SA that features the actor Keanu Reeves. But despite eight years of development and three release delays, the critical consensus is that the game could have used more time in the oven.

While most video game companies put out new games every year or two, this is CD Projekt’s first major release since 2015’s the Witcher 3, raising the stakes for the Polish gaming giant. Ahead of the Dec. 10 release of Cyberpunk 2077, game reviews were published Monday, lauding its ambition and emotional weight but criticizing the glut of bugs.

So people are complaining about bugs in an unreleased game? Makes sense.

At least one review I saw said they received a patch during the review period and a CDPR representative confirmed that patch is the version of the game people will be playing at launch.

The review copies did have Denuvo apparently so best to wait for the DRM free version for performance reviews though.

Yea, few things.

1) DRM is present, so performance is non-representative.
2) It is NOT the launch copy, so take it with a bag of salt.
3) It's a brand new game, bugs are expected, just as with EVERY SINGLE OTHER GAME LAUNCHED.
4) They're providing review material when CDPR has specifically stated they shouldn't, hence the DRM being present. That makes them untrustworthy in my books.

Just wait for the game to launch, play it and see for yourself. Klaar.

IIRC that instruction went out to streamers - not to stream ahead of the release date. Didn't apply to reviewers. The reason for this is it would provide some streamers an unfair competitive advantage over others.

It wouldn't make sense to ask reviewers not to review it until it releases. How would people know if they'd like to buy it or not?

There was a review deadline in place, that's why all the reviews are up now. It's a bit worrying that it has so many bugs though, especially the ones that you don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not, or forcing you to constantly reload to fix things....

The embargo expired yesterday, yes. Forbes bitched about it in two articles because they didn't receive a review copy

'Every' review had the Day 0 patch installed which was ~50GB in size, and apparently the Day 1 patch is the same, but with additional optimisations. I believe those who have already pre-loaded Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a small patch on launch day. These remarks are only related to PC.

For bugs... well, this is CDPR, I haven't seen a lot, but the PS gameplay on a PS4 which I watched had bugs amongst other issues. The Witcher was also in this state, there is a reason this is a meme,

As it stands going by the reviews the game world uber alles, and I am okay with that.

When it comes to the hardware concern, many, incl. CDPR, are blaming the DRM implementation which will be removed with the Day 1 patch, but personally, I believe it will come down to game and GPU driver optimisations. Adding a rough 10% still doesn’t make those preview benchmarks any good unless you have brand spanking new gaming hardware. DRM really cannot be your excuse.

The Tom's Hardware benchmarks were done without any patching as the Day 0 patch wasn't pushed to them.

Behaviourally on PC, this game should be designed to be optimal on the new PS5 and Xbox X series and that hardware specs should be your own PCs benchmark.

The main reason I'm worried is that when I got Witcher 3 I really loved it. But after about 4-8h I made it to the 2nd area and hit a physics bug where my horse and I would just float, making movement impossible.

I couldn't refund it, and by the time they eventually fixed it I didn't really want to go back anymore, so that was it for my Witcher 3 experience.

Go back - it's the best PC game I've ever played in my 44 year long life. And I had an Olivetti M24 for context...

It's a very divisive game. If you like it you'll swear by it. But if you couldn't get into it, you'll never be able to.

I personally fall into the second camp. Tried many times but could never get into it no matter how much time I put into it...

By the time they have fixed the bugs, I'll have a new graphics card. Fine by me.

I replayed that starting area later on when they fixed the issue, but I wasn't enjoying it like I did the first time. I just got to the 2nd big area and then basically quit :/

I was expecting bugs but I'm also expecting CPR to fix them up soon enough
They have earned enough good will in my books to be given a chance

Maybe we should hire bloomberg. Might even do a better job around here.

I think the best decision for those who don't want to waste their time, is to wait 1-3 months for the bugs to be worked out. It's not that CDPR is bad, its just that the game is that complex.

Same applies for all games. Except Bethesda, Skyrim is still a buggy mess.
