Cyberpunk 2077's glitches cost CD Projekt founders over R15 billion

The technical glitches plaguing CD Projekt SA’s Cyberpunk 2077 game have cut more than $1 billion off the wealth of the company’s founders.

Perhaps more seriously, the quality-first image of the studio has been shaken, and may not be easy to win back.

CD Projekt shares plunged by a third over the past six days as the number of bugs plaguing the highly anticipated futuristic game prompted an apology from the firm and an offer for refunds of gamers on previous-generation consoles.

Man oh man, it's like everyone's forgotten the state Witcher 3 launched in. Buggy, poor performing (especially on consoles), very unstable, lacking features. It sounds so familiar. The game everyone lauds today is only that way because it got patched heavily in the weeks following launch. People making fun of how the cars are buggy seem to have forgotten the plenty of bugs which plagued Roach in Witcher 3.

As usual in the hype everyone seems to have collectively forgotten that CDPR has *NEVER* put out perfect or even bug-free products. Every Witcher game had tons of problems on launch, but it was the writing and the characters that people ultimately remember, and Cyberpunk is no different. Given the scale of the game it's not a shock that there's just a lot that needs work still.

The game will get fixed in the coming weeks and next month or two, just like Witcher was. The large patches coming will both fix and add content just like Witcher did. People need to chill, they expected more than the studio has ever delivered, and got disappointed. What a shock.

Anyone remember the "visual downgrade" anger from fans when Witcher 3 was launched on PC and didn't match the visuals of the trailers they'd been putting out? The upset that smoke and fire didn't look the way it was advertised?

Yeah I guess no-one does.

When people use the line "Perhaps more seriously, the quality-first image of the studio has been shaken, and may not be easy to win back." it irks me because that statement isn't based in any form of reality.

Witcher 3 was their first real AAA release so bugs there were forgiven.

Cyberpunk is mainly an RPG shooter with cars in an open world. The main problem are the consoles. CDPR stated just a few weeks ago that the game runs well on the PS4 and Xbox One. Yet it looks like a 15 year old game and has massive fps issues with things failing to load, etc. Other developers have already released open world games which look and run way better on those consoles. Plus the game was supposed to initially release for the PS4 and Xbox One, well before PS5 and Xbox Series X launched. So you can't argue that this game was not developed with those older consoles in mind which is what many are doing. Hell, the game was first mentioned before the PS4 even launched in 2013.

Big difference being that W3 targeted one generation of consoles and PC.

Have you seen how this game runs on PS4/XBOne? It's a joke. Not to mention CDPR purposefully never said anything about it the issues while the hype train was chugging along - deceitful if you ask me. People are not upset about bugs, they are upset about paying nearly 1k for a "AAA" game and then getting 15fps and something that straight up looks like a PS1 game...

And if this was EA or Ubisoft we would bring out the crosses, hammers and nails? Of course I myself did so with ID software for less.

Keeping the same standard I've requested a refund on gog.

If they properly fixup CP I will of course return to it when it's actually ready. However I didn't take leave from work to debug yet another IP.

And people thought BG3 EA was 'bad'

Most hated is a big exaggeration. One buggy release doesn't turn CDPR into EA & Activision.

With 20/20 hindsight I'll still pre-order this. Amazing game.

It sucks though for old console players. However I understand they'll get a free upgrade to next generation consoles in terms of the game.

Won't it be patched though?
I spoke to someone I know that bought the PS4 edition this week,
He said there was a 20+GB update he has to install.
Am I misunderstanding?

They are promising a couple of quick updates for current gen consoles.

These guys worked their asses off.
It's no simple task to make what they did.
Release time was flawed.
I still suggest not getting a refund, but rather wait for the fixes.

Main problem is the old consoles. Apparently 41% of the 8 million pre-orders were on consoles. Most of those would have been on the old consoles. So there are a huge amount of people with a crap version of the game.

Their CEO misled everyone and they also never posted any PS4 and XBOne footage. This is what he said on 27 November, just a couple weeks ago:

CD Projekt joint-CEO Adam Kaciński has praised Cyberpunk 2077's performance on PS4 and Xbox One in an investor call.
Speaking earlier this week on Wednesday (and transcribed by Seeking Alpha), Kaciński said that Cyberpunk 2077's performance on the base PS4 and Xbox One consoles is "surprisingly good, I would say, for such a huge world." The CEO went on to say that although the performance on these base consoles is lower than their "pro" counterparts (the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X), it's still surprisingly good.

Recently, CD Projekt released gameplay for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X versions of Cyberpunk 2077. "We had those extra three weeks and we achieved a lot by – within this final stretch," Kaciński went on to say. "So, we believe that the game is performing great on every platform. Of course, accordingly to platform capabilities, but not every platform should be great."

We know now that he was lying through his teeth. Unless "surprisingly good" for him is 15fps and looking like GTA 3.

CDPR just lost all their goodwill by hiding the old console mess from players until release day.

Success, Growth, Hype.

All these things also took down other beloved companies and turned their once amazing delivered games into buggy crappy messes ie. Bioware, Bethesda, etc.

Just because a company had some great progression does not mean at some point and with some game they will also be heading in the same flawed direction of, "Too loved and famous to fail".

I agree that Cyberpunk 2077 is a massive game but if they did not put money ahead of delivering the absolute best most stable final product on release date then this would not have happened.

CDPR failed in this regard because it all came down to $ signs for them ahead of a "polished" final product and now after release the $ signs is turning into -$ signs.

Consoles lamers whining about their garbage platforms of choice...

5yr old hardware, game runs fine.

Biggest gripes are the vehicles, (steering so poor even the AI struggles), and some missions are bugged... aside from that. Zip. Nada.

Whine further.

They will recover. Watch this space and hold my beer.

I will support CDPR, as long as they don't sell to EA.....
