The Oudtshoorn Municipality says it is investigating how an ordinary DA councillor was paid the salary of a mayoral committee member for more than a year. This follows revelations by the Office of the Auditor-General that councillor Marcellis Theyse had received nearly double his salary since he was voted in.

Theyse assumed position as councillor for Ward 13 after a by-election on May 30, 2018 following the death of the then-councillor.
Spokesperson for the municipality, Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, said: “We can confirm that there was an overpayment of salary to an ordinary councillor.

“The matter is being investigated. We can also assure that the money will be recovered.” The ANC in the council has questioned how the reported error could have been allowed to occur for such a long period without anyone taking notice of it.

The party’s chief whip in the council, Jongilizwei Tyatya, said they only learned of the issue last month during a visit from the auditor-general’s office.

Municipality pays R18m in salaries twice – but workers refuse to give it back

A cash-strapped Mpumalanga municipality may need pickaxes and shovels to recover about R18 million in salaries that were paid twice to its employees last month.

An error by officials in the Nkomazi Local Municipality’s finance department saw workers getting paid their salaries on the 15th instead of the 25th.

When the council decided not to pay the workers on the correct pay day, 10 days later, the workers shut down all water treatment plants and other municipal services.

The council bent over backwards and paid the bonanza to contain the service delivery chaos.

If you're wise with your money then getting paid a salary in advance like this is not bad at all.
Pay off some debt in advance and reduce interest... put it in a savings account and supplement that 20% deduction from there every month plus you get a few pennies of interest for free.

Bloody politicians are (mostly) all the same.

I guess we can just dream of jail time.
