DA explains SMS, email register to vote “spam” campaign

Bull crap. They never got my permission. I signed up for NOTHING. Fscking liars.

I really don't mind these SMS's and Emails. People complain about silly things these days... The DA is doing the right thing reminding people the importance of registering for the elections. Cape Town is way better than other provinces, because the DA knows how to run and provide. In the end it is either ANC or DA... My vote is DA

Good work DA, ignore the losers who complain.

I don't mind emails. But I hate getting SMS spam. 4 SMS's in 2 days.
This is not what I want from a party that represents me.

Political parties are like STD's. I dont like any of them but if I had to choose I'd choose the DA (chlamydia)

Perhaps someone, somewhere, made an error when filling in something giving them your number. Also, and even if not, grow the **** up.

I agree with you in principle, but I'm sure those saying the same thing here wouldn't be as magnanimous if the spam was coming from the ANC.

The difference is that the ANC consists mainly of corrupt, self-enriching scum and the DA is the only organisation able to do anything about them in the short to medium term. That said I'd even grant the ANC a bit of leeway on the weekend of voter registration; political apathy will sooner see this country undone than support for any one party. Any reasonable attempt to inform and motivate people to register should be welcomed.

A big song and dance over a few emails or SMSs is just infantile.

I can add to this though, they did not have any permission to do this.

How many acts up until today had been deployed to protect any and all persons against actions like these? Acts established and approved by government, many which the people want to be brought into law. How many opt-out on DMMA? How many against the Google privacy debacle?

as well as from consumer databases.

Strange how supportive everyone was with the POPI act, which is not yet approved, this act goes against these actions.

Asked what the DA’s view is on companies which send spam emails and SMSes to users, he said that “the DA is a political party and not a company”.

The above is hypocritical when it comes to our protection acts, which is established by political parties (government).

This may have been an awareness campaign but it is against the very principle to the laws which our country wants to create.

BTW, I received an SMS on a brand new SIM, three days old without anyone else knowing about the number.

This.

I didn't receive anything.

“sourced from contact details obtained from canvassing efforts by ground structures across the country as well as from consumer databases”.
What databases?

No matter how one looks at this, what the DA did goes against our rights.

“sourced from contact details obtained from canvassing efforts by ground structures across the country as well as from consumer databases”.

I mean, wtf does that mean in English?

They don't even provide a way to be removed from their database. A few months ago I got tons of calls from their call centre and when I called back to ask them to remove me, they said they would yet I still seem to be on their database.

DA is definitely a better option as a party right now but if they don't adhere to basic communication principles then they are losing the plot.

i didnt mind getting an SMS reminder... as been said, its quite important to us all that we go vote, for whichever party takes your fancy, although i knew already it was registration weekend.
But really... reminding me by SMS once is really enough, i would've got the message through first time.... 3 times makes me feel like they're wasting money that could be spent better.

were they thinking the SMS system may be so unreliable, that they wanted to make sure we receive the msg?

Wow, I can't believe that nobody saw the mistake in the article >
The Democratic Alliance (DA) said that it sent “register to win” bulk emails and SMSs to email addresses and mobile numbers...
should perhaps have been >

Anyway interesting responses and article. :)

I believe the intended message is register to vote for the DA to allow them to win Gauteng in 2014.

As with the SMS I received, do not have the original anymore but it did state, "register to vote DA". This in the Western Cape.
