The unnamed former teacher said colleagues had complained about having been told to increase the marks of weaker candidates, so that, for example 20% be boosted to 30%, which was a pass.

The other complainant, a teacher involved in marking history papers, also alleged that the department instructed teachers that no pupil may get zero out of 30 for an essay.

The teacher further alleged that they were instructed that if pupils were able to produce just one fact, they had to be given nine out of 30 -- almost a pass. The marks in every one of these teacher's papers were later allegedly raised by the chief moderator.

For knowing a single fact you get 33.3% - I would have been a genius at school !

after having looked at the maths literacy paper it is astounding that people in grade 12 struggle to get the minimum required pass mark.

This is what you need to pass Matric these days....

To obtain a NSC, a candidate must achieve 40% or more in a Home Language and in two other subjects. The candidate must also achieve at least 30% in the three other subjects.

True, really, I kid you not.

And we had a 38% failure rate. WTF are these scholars (not LEARNERS) doing?

There is no maybe about it. The results were inflated. According to a high ranking official in the E/Cape the pass rate was not 50% as reported but rather closer to 30%. Off the record of course.

Now that person that actually got 30% or 40% gets moved up 20% to 50% and 60% respectively which technically is a Exemption mark as far I am aware.

Now my son who does matric this year and scores above average marks, will be competing for University Entrance with students who actually did not pass in the first place.
