Damaged HDMI ports on a LG Plasma

Does anyone know what can be done?

I can get audio, but no video when playing a DVD. I can get a normal signal from the decoder. Tried replacing the HDMI cable - same result. We had a thunderstorm a while ago and I think that could be the cause of the damage. Can these ports be fixed?

Does someone know what they cost to fix or replace?

Any help / advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

If the set is under warranty, maybe try getting a replacement/sending it in for repairs.

You sure its not the HDMI port on the DVD player that is broken, could be cheaper to replace than the LCD ....

Nope - connected it via HDMI to my computer screen. DVD works 100%.

Best bet now would just be component cables I guess, unless you can find someone who fixes Plasmas for cheap.

What other ports do you have on your Plasma ?

I have a slightly older plasma, no HDMI ports (only DVI, which doesn't help because the DVI doesn't support HDCP). I ordered a gadget over the internet that gave me HDMI -> 15 pin DSUB (which the plasma has). I needed that for a Sony PS3 as well as a LG DVD Player. Also bought a automatic 3 -> 1 HDMI switch.

All OK now !

Thanks Jola - I might consider that.

The people at LG seem to think that the Input/Output board may be damaged.

Still waiting to hear what it would cost to replace.

Got my I/O board on my plasma replaced a couple of weeks ago. My HDMI ports were also fried. Seems like the slightest electrical spike can damage these boards. A daschund chewed through my HDMI cable which resulted in the damage. My TV was still under warranty though, so they replaced it for free. If it wasn't, then I would've had worshond rolls for supper. :D

Got a call a few minutes ago from the LG repairman. A new I/O board will cost me about R800. Going to try the 3 RCA to 3 RCA route. Maybe that will work. If not = :(

Like you say Penguin, they are very susceptable to surges. Apparently you should unplug the DVD and TV before even considering touching the HDMI cable - that's how sensitive they are.

Thanks for everyone's input!
